19, 18, and 17 are all pronounced with their main number followed by teen. So 11 should be oneteen. The cat was so close.

As someone who has had to teach place value to little kids you have no idea how much easier my job would be if English numbers were actually named this way. Or better yet if English were like the many languages that basically just say "one ten and one", "three tens and five" etc

razorrozar posted:if you'd grown up being taught it it wouldn't be though Not really, it just sounds clunky, especially the "three tens" part when Chinese is the only language I can think of that doesn't have specific words for 20, 30, etc. Even when it's literally "thirty and five", most natural speakers tend to blend the and or even omit it.

I only speak English so I have no real context for how ugly and confusing French numbers were when I dallied in it but I am happy to have my deep and lingering prejudice against the French reinforced

well at least it's the twenty-and-oneth century now so we don't have to read out dates like "the ten-eighth of october, thousand nine hundred four twenty twelve"

SpacePig posted:They've literally done a video about it. I'm not sure how much to trust this dude since he is very wrong about how to say numbers in Tongan. Tongan works like Chinese/Korean/Japanese etc in that they have words for 0-9, ten, hundred, thousand and you combine them to make the inbetween numbers. Same with Māori, Samoan, and basically every other polynesian language that I've encountered.
