I wish you guys had started making GBS threads on Code Vein like this before I bought it and also mentioned that the character creator doesn't go as in depth as even Saint's Row the Fourth.

Also you can't get a shirt and pants if you're making a female character either.

Even disregarding the sexualization, the character creator outfits are very Anime Characters Refuse To Wear Normal Person Clothes. There aren't any female outfits that have pants, just weird skirts and leather chaps and stuff. It's got this goth punk kinda aesthetic to it that doesn't apply to the rest of the game for some reason. The game is basically an anime OC simulator with all the good and bad that entails.

Honestly they nailed the tone they were going for, the way the grungy character designs clash with the low fantasy game world is pretty cool and makes everyone look really distinct. It's got this cool DMC style progression from urban decay to dark palaces and mythological fantasy. I can see how the ode to sexiness-as-a-character-trait would turn some people off though.

It might make you feel better to know that the visuals are where it stops, the game doesn't fall into the trappings of being perverted in the name of humor or drama like many of its peers.

I was expecting that it wouldn't matter afterwards and you'd get armor that changed your appearance like usual and that didn't actually happen.

A much bigger problem is that you can't actually make your character buff at all.

The level design opens and ends really strongly imo but yeah there are some areas in the middle that are... not good. The minimap with breadcrumb trail and height variance is really cool though and I'm glad the game has it.

It's half a problem, you can get armor. But not in the way you're expecting. The game suggests at some point there was an armor system since certain blood codes reference things like "this blood code allows you to wear heavy armor" but heavy armor literally doesn't exist. Instead you can wear varying types of robes or coats;

I tried the demo and was honestly offput that you HAVE to wear a jacket over your shoulders the wrong way with your arms not in the sleeves in that super emo / anime way

And that's the part of your gear you customize, you get different armor sets and they change the jacket that you don't wear but instead drape like a shawl

Meanwhile your chest armor / pants are a selection from like 4 options, all of which are basically just slightly different sleeveless shirts and shorts.

I got a switch for Christmas and while the games I got for it (BotW, Mario Rabbids, Into the Breach, Overcooked) have been really good, there's a couple things dragging the system down.

-The eShop is pretty bad. No shopping cart so everything needs to be bought one-by-one. There's also no way to look at a full directory of games (I think) or a way to combine filters to sift through the huge amount of shovelware games in the store.

-Similarly the main menu/library screen is really barebones. No way to filter out uninstalled games or demos or set your own categories. Everything is just laid out on a horizontal bar you have to scroll through.
Also the Switch still doesn't have themes for the home page beyond the default light/dark ones, for some godforsaken reason.

That armor changes how your parry attacks look. I don't know if it affects damage because there's like nine different things changing every time you hover over a new piece of armor and I can't be bothered to evaluate all of that.

The one you were wearing would turn the blood whatever into a pair of dragon heads that bite on the enemy. The first one I got was a big beast claw and then another one later after that was like a scorpion tail that had a sword at the end instead of a normal stinger.

Started playing through the 'nu-Wolfenstein' series, and started with The Old Blood, since it's first in the new chronology, and I haven't played it first.

For those who don't know, the game has a perk system where you unlock perks/bonuses based on stuff you do. A small challenge system to encourage you to do specific stuff.

That is good.
However, the one to unlock the first armor boost is to pick up 100 helmets.
Helmets are a pickup that give you like +5 armor.
But you can't pick these up if you're at full armor.

That (And of course the peeve that you don't pick up non-overcharge food/armor automatically.) is just weirdly annoying to me.

'tee hee, find enough of these, but you can only pick them up if you pop out and let and enemy shoot at you first for a bit.'
I kinda wish I could just hold down E to pick them up regardless of them being wasted, since they're integral for a perk.

Though granted, this is mostly an issue in the stealth segments of the game, where you are likely to end up not getting shot at for a while.

e: Also, while it's kind of amusing how the game goes 'Pipe! the most useful of tools!' I really dislike first-person-climbing-mechanics like this, where it's pretty drat slow. And in an earlier-gen-game would feel like something used to mask loading.

Just let me shimmy up it with W instead of slowly going left mouse right mouse left mouse for 'immersion'.

e: and this 'retro wolfenstein' thing I unlocked by accident is very very terrible and kinda nauseating. Having a 3d character + camera combined with every single sprite billboarding towards you while you move quickly around is impressively wonky.
(The retro Doom levels in Doom2016 were good though, on the other hand. Possibly due to far far far fewer billbording sprites?)

It was a real let down for me that you never unlocked more clothing in Code Vein. Yeah you get more armor but that never covered more than my character's shoulders and some of their chest. One of my favorite parts of God Eater is that you're continually unlocking more clothing throughout the game, so I assumed that would be the case here, but nope what you see during character creation is what you get.

Also yeah the level design is real bad. Standouts are the fire level where half of the ground continually damages you and you take major damage if you bump into a wall, and the obligatory swamp of shittyness. Most of the levels feel like procgen even though they aren't.

I enjoyed how enemies would attempt to run away when you fired the Cerebral Bore at them, only to get caught from behind a few seconds later.

Thing that dragged Turok down for me was it was way too easy to get lost, especially since the N64 didn't really have the capacity to pull of a longer draw distance. Fog fog everywhere.

I still remember the password to turn on all the cheat codes though, funny how that stuff burns into your brain.

Doesn’t Disco Elysium have some toxic masculinity themes going on? I sadly haven’t gotten to play it yet but I’ve heard a lot about it and it certainly seems and sounds that way.

Either way I get not wanting to play a game starring a man, especially one starring a man like DE’s protagonist, though I don’t think you can just slap a create-a-character into a game like that without losing a lot.

Content- I’ve been playing through DMCV on new game+ and while the ng+ is handled very well, seeing everything again makes it even more clear how ugly and smart all the environments are. I don’t think there’s a single one I actually like. The game was apparently made on a somewhat tight budget, and if so I think they did put their money in the right places, but I would’ve really liked at least as much variety as DMC4

disco elysium is actually one game that's very much designed around its protagonist. the same story wouldn't work with a woman at the middle

that said, knowing that it's a story that actually makes use of the fact that it's a man doesn't make me want to play it any more; i hear the devs are toying with a similar game focused around a pregnant woman and i would be thrilled about that

Brazilianpeanutwar posted:

it's easy to not care about representation when your gender is the one that's everywhere. in the vast majority of games, you know you'll be able to play as a man. being able to identify with the playable character is something men take for granted, but is still immensely novel for women; hell i'd be happy if basically every game had a Prey-styled choice at the beginning. it's a little thing but makes such a big difference
