The Aardvark posted:Pretty sure my next cookware purchase is gonna be a bigass wok of some sort. Don't have one of those yet. Its not traditional, but look into the cast iron woks. Most western stoves can't really put out enough heat to drive a big wok, but you can heat sink the cast iron and get really good results.

I bet it was in front of a Lion's Den. That chain still thrives on in the midwest with rubber dick and dvd sales to truckers and olds. I saw that in my feed this morning, Missouri wasn't in the title, so I immediately thought it was the store I worked at for a month in central Kentucky (on transfer from Nashville). Wildly boring place, only time I saw college kids have a sword fight in the parking lot with double-ender dildos off the side of the interstate, too.

I have a cast iron skillet that is in the "can see my reflection in it" phase of seasoning, but for simplicity and using as little fat as possible, I keep a nonstick around just for scrambling eggs. Jesus Christ that's a hell of a waffle iron. I left my last electric waffle iron in Erbil about 5 years ago. I sometimes wonder if it's still there making waffles for the troops.

colachute posted:People freak out about putting caste iron in the dishwasher but I did it and everything turned out fine. Most of the old school cast iron wisdom is irrelevant these days. Once a pan is seasoned it’s pretty hard to damage it without physically scraping it off. Soap and water are fine. I think there was specifically a problem with old soap made out of lye or something.

Yeah my only real complaint about using cast iron stuff is the weight. Trying to drain a pan full of grease is a challenge when it weights like 30 pounds and all you have is an awkward grip on the burning hot handle.

The short version is the Catholic Church didn't allow Christians to charge interest on loans, but Jews could. So Jews were looked at as money grubbing bankers. At least that's what my fuzzy, possibly wrong recollection of the explanation is.
