IHG has a fantastic mid-tier footprint with really lovely luxury offerings but they are loving everywhere. Hotel Indigos and Kimptons are nice in the states and Intercontentials are like....the most basic luxury offering ever. In europe though they are fantastic and the Crown Plaza just NE of paris city center is fantastic!

I went with IHG originally cause of their footprint

Why bother with silver? I can’t even motivate myself to book Marriotts direct instead of thru Hotels.com right now as a platinum member.

Thoughts on gate checking when it isn’t needed? It’s a pain in the rear end to carry 3 laptops in a backpack, but it does let me free up the area under my seat for stretching out. Lord knows I’m not getting anything out of my carryon anyway.

That sounds like a question from a person who hasn't ever had a piece of luggage lost or stolen. (I haven't either)
If it's the a la carte thing on small planes where you kinda HAVE to check it and it's handed back to you when you get off the plane instead of going through the whole luggage process, yeah I do that no problem.
The only times I do the other way (checked through to final destination; shows up in baggage claim) is if I already have a bag checked into the system because gently caress waiting for baggage claim if all I had, to begin with, was a carry-on.

Why not get a Marriott credit card, and get free silver every year, plus some bonus points?

https://creditcards.chase.com/travel-credit-cards/marriott-bonvoy-bold?CELL=6TKX
or
https://creditcards.chase.com/travel-credit-cards/marriott-bonvoy-boundless?CELL=6TKX

The one with the annual fee offers a better signup bonus, better rewards if you use it to pay for Marriott stays, and a free night every year (subject to a cap of 35,000 points). But either give you 15 qualifying nights every year just for holding the card.

Yeah, not sure I'd advise checking a laptop.

I have to do it anyway on the regional flights and it’s been nice enough that I may do it for longer flights voluntary. They don’t let you check laptops in there anyway, but they also don’t look. I did leave a switch in there one time by accident.

I havent entirely embraced the notion of just opening credit cards for perks yet tbh.

Ive had a CSP for 3 years and opened an American Aviator Red card for the no spend 65k miles offer earlier this year in October. It has an 89$ annual fee so ill downgrade it or close it out next year. I dont even use it to buy big AA tickets since id rather have the 3x multiplier on chase points i guess that may be dumb but theyre alot for fungible i feel like.

These are my only 2 cc's.

I stay mainly IHG but their luxury offerings kind of suck so I'm leaning more Marriott this year to try and build that out and fold the points into a st.regis or something swanky for vacation. I just cant always justify the cost of a Marriott since some places i go dont have em or theyre more expensive than i can swing without anyone saying boo (about 150~ a night despite now being a nearly quarter billion dollar company start up mentality reigns supreme)

I'm relatively financially illiterate and i just have a vague sense of credit cards bad and annual fees bad from my parents so im pretty tentative.

I have no debt and good $$, i just guess cc's scare me.

Do you guys just keep stacks of cards open for the perks?

Dont ever check bags you dont have too.

Do it. Seriously. I get an extra few domestic flights a year through my Delta AMEX. I’ve been doing this for a few years, I pay off my card at the end of the month everyone month and I haven’t paid a dime of interest.

You do have to be strict and having multiple cards may effect your credit rating but I’m not I’m not buying a house soon, my rating is great so YMMV.

Credit cards are a tool; it depends on how you use them. If you pay off your statement balance in full every month, you will not pay any interest, but will you reap rewards. Essentially use it like an enhanced debit card -- the problem comes when you use it to buy things you can't or won't immediately pay for.

Waroduce posted:

Yeah, a lot of travellers hold a few cards for the perks, and "sockdraw" them, i.e., keep them somewhere secure not on their person. Although do be aware some issuers may close a card if there's no use on it, so it can be beneficial to have some small periodic charge go to it.

Is this a portmanteau of “sock drawer”, ie the notion of putting something away there?

I would presume so. I have a couple of cards that serve only to act as a record of my credit history and act as a landing pad for Netflix or whatever each month.

My global entry is up for renewal and it looks like appointments are not easy to schedule. Nothing available at home in Philly at all, but I'm able to sneak an interview in at LAX in a few months. Does availability change for these month to month much?

Did it already expire? If not you shouldn’t need an appointment to renew it.

Not accurate. A reinterview may be required. It was for me but not my wife.

https://help.cbp.gov/s/sidebar-top-5-travel?language=en_US

There’s a year grace period after expiration. Renew before it expires, use the benefits for a year after expiration and do interview on arrival if you are required to.

Goondolances.

But definitely apply now rather than after it expires because you’ll still get the benefits while they process it. My wife let hers expire and no more TSA Pre for her until they schedule her appointment.

Interview availability changes frequently and you can also interview on entry to the US at a lot of airports without a scheduling.

I love going to Mexico but you need to watch your loving back there. My GF grew up in Chula Vista and going to Mexico for a cheap haircut or whatever was pretty much her whole childhood, but she told me the other day that one of her friends almost got kidnapped - went to a nail salon and the owner must have told the kidnapper she was American. Had a van waiting outside when she got out and tried to grab her.
