http://emergency.vic.gov.au/ currently has four "evacuate immediately if possible" warnings and fourteen "It's too late to evacuate" warnings, the situation is extremely hosed The cold front is currently sweeping through all those areas and bringing some extreme lightning storms which is very very bad news because those gale force winds from a new direction will open up a bunch of new & bigger fire fronts and all that lightning will create a whole bunch more fires

Got paid on Thursday so I've doubled my donation, a further $50, this time to the Bushfire Appeal via the Carlton Football Club. Also, it hit 48C in Penrith (western-most syndey suburbs) today, along with the hottest temp ever recorded in Canberra (44C). It isn't even the hot part of summer yet for South East Australia, we might hit 50c in a capital city in 3-5 weeks when the hot part of summer rolls around. Oh, and the Hume Freeway is closed at Euroa, so now coastal and inland route between Melbourne and Sydney are closed due to fires.

With all these “too late to evacuate” warnings and alerts going on, what are people supposed to do? What does shelter in place actually mean? Is the expectation that folks just stay in their homes and hope it doesn’t burn down around them, or do people have some kind of fire shelters built on their properties or something ?

We've always kinda joked that "hey at least we will run out of forest eventually" here in BC, but it wouldn't actually work that way without everything being very, very broken. Looks like you guys are actually attempting the "burn everything that can possibly be burned" strategy, so props for getting a jump on that poo poo. Is the NSW fire service the best place to toss some donations or is there something more needful right now?

Sometimes people just get really creative with sheltering "I ran to my ute but my garden was already on fire, the driveway was on fire, the road was on fire so I couldn't evacuate," Mr Harrison told the ABC. With nowhere to go and no firefighters to help, the professional potter hid inside a makeshift shelter made out of fireproof ceramic fibres as the flames approached. "The day before I had actually built myself a small kiln down the back — a coffin-sized kiln — just big enough for me to crawl inside," he recalled while fighting back tears. "I was in there for half an hour while the firestorm went over. It was huge, just glowing orange-red everywhere. Just scary. I was terrified." He admits he could have died. "I could have if I hadn't thought about plan B. In that little kiln enclosure I made, I had a fire extinguisher, a bucket of water, a drinking water bottle and a fire blanket."

Seems like after months of fires the news in the US must be covering the fires. I have had a ton of phone calls and messages from family and friends in the US today. I have been telling them shits hosed for ages, but I guess people need to see it on Fox news to believe it. I am now seeing normally non-political people on Facebook saying we need to eat the rich/hang politicians which is a good sign.

A bunker built in accordance with the national construction code is fine, but its when people just bury a shipping container or run a ladder down into an old septic tank where people gently caress themselves up. I heard about a bloke a few years ago who climbed into a "bunker" that was just a buried water tank and just cooked like a lamb roast.

Bet we start investing more in the technology now though! Efwayb

The national power grid has been broken up. New South Wales will be facing loadshedding/rolling brownouts tonight. Victoria and New South Wales are no longer connected to eachother due to fires impacting the high voltage transmission lines near the Kosciuszko National Park. From the Guardian Liveblog: https://www.theguardian.com/austral...f087e8308e68552 quote:Obviously a disaster of this magnitude affects vital infrastructure. TransGrid says the power grid has been impacted. Paul Italiano, the chief executive of TransGrid (these guys operate the high voltage transmission network in the state) has just told the ABC they are experiencing fire damage to assets around the Kosciuszko National Park. “We’ve had to separate the two states and it is no longer operating as a single national electricity market and that has compromised the availability of energy to New South Wales”.
