It's 6:30am on the east coast and conditions are still extremely hosed down in East Gippsland. The Vic CFA emergency site currently has two current "Evacuate now" warnings and eleven "Seek shelter, it's too late to evacuate" warnings, some of which were just upgraded in the last half hour. Some of those official warnings are incredibly grim, flat out telling people "If you leave your house now you will die" Goddamn

The skies of Canberra have turned orange. People are going to be panicking, the last time this happened we lost 400 houses. As far as I know we're still without fires within the borders, but still. loving hell.

From listening to one of the many NSW CFA radio feeds, the overnight shift is done and they're regrouping to try and fight the fire front at Nowra, the Currowan fire still expanding. Just hoping the winds don't blow easterly and blow the fire over the range.

I was looking at the fire map posted earlier, and it struck my that the nations capital, currently only has one exit - to the north - that is not blockaded by fire. And that Northern exit? has a fire close to it.

I've seen a couple posts in the thread about people wishing to do something. Take this with a slight grain of salt since Aus Red Cross is not a carbon copy of the American Red Cross but looking at their website they're doing all the same functions. Generally speaking during any large disaster the RC is inundated with people who want to help, and they almost always get put to work. You might end up unloading a truck full of blankets or handing out water battles but that poo poo adds up. If you have useful skills even better, see if you can help out and be proactive about speaking to your strengths. I yanked a guy who just showed up out of the handing-out-bottles-of-water business because I found out he knew how to use Excel and I put him in into the manage-this-huge-database-of-megashelters business.

Scotty just hosed up again. He did not bother telling the Rural Fire Commissioner (Shane Fitzsimmons) about his plans yesterday. Fitzsimmons is pretty much adored and has been kicking rear end and taking names and he looked pissed that he found out the same way everyone else did and was not consulted. https://twitter.com/smh/status/1213577862403543040 Hell even the NSW premier said she only found out right before the announcement. It's been raining pretty constantly here in Melbourne this morning. However those fires need days, even at least a week's worth of rain, to control them.

5mm of rain in Parndana overnight, 4mm in Kingscote. Hopefully that'll help out the fires on Kangaroo Island. Bairnsdale hasn't had enough rain to register on their gauges yet, so it's early days.

The quantity of fine ash that’s come down overnight and is still coming down has formed drifts on the windscreens of cars. Unlike previously where it was full leaves this is super fine.

The Green Wattle Fire that’s spread towards the mountains now has its own name as of this morning. There will be very little of the world heritage listed national park that forms a majority of the mountains by the time this thing finishes.

The part of the Currowan fire that jumped the Shoalhaven river last night has also been separated off and is now the Morton fire. Firies are worried it could join up with the southern edge of the Green Wattle Creek fire which would be hosed because it would close the M31 Hume Highway if it did.
