Yes. It was basically a national humiliation, and Boomers being a bunch of lead brained psychos that care more about feeling good than doing anything smart, have held a psychotic grudge over it ever since.

the beirut barracks bombing is a big one. the iranians and hezbollah also managed to kidnap, torture and execute the CIA station chief for the middle east in the 80s, and blew up a meeting of the whole top CIA mideast leadership thanks to the information they extracted from him.

Also the CIA got every single informant in Lebanon murked because the codeword they used for their meetings was "PIZZA" because it was at a loving Pizza Hut, and seriously who would stake out every pizza place in Beirut? Turns out the answer to that question is Hezbollah.

it's 2 points really:

1) The Intelligence community and Military hates Iran for stuff mostly from the 70s and 80s (overthrowing the Shah, Beirut barracks bombing, killing a CIA station chief) as well as the fact that Iran's really been a huge actor in Iraq since the invasion.

2) Regular Americans hate Iran because we've been subjected to at least 20 years of hard HARD islamophobia in all our mass media. I don't know if most people- even people who were alive and old enough to remember it- know if the Beirut bombing was real or something from a season of the A-Team at this point.

But it's not entirely clear what the KDP's base thinks about the whole thing. They might also be pretty mad.
Edit: Remember that Erdogan only swerved hard towards anti-Kurdish policies after his old plan to win conservative Kurds for the AKP failed due to the massive gain in prestige the PKK got from their fight in Syria.

They had a similar fuckup in China which led to the entire CIA informant network getting rounded up and shot.

They used a central server for informants to submit their info but the Chinese broke into the system.

Most of it was due to how the CIA was lazy and in places like Iraq/Afganistan there wasn't enough IT savy to do things like launch cyber-security attacks.

Didn't realize that the Iranians and Chinese were much more savy.

quote:

In fact, the Iranians used Google to identify the website the CIA was using to communicate with agents. Because Google is continuously scraping the internet for information about all the world’s websites, it can function as a tremendous investigative tool — even for counter-espionage purposes. And Google’s search functions allow users to employ advanced operators — like “AND,” “OR,” and other, much more sophisticated ones — that weed out and isolate websites and online data with extreme specificity.

oh poo poo Iran has Boolean capability now
