I'm not sure what the point here is- 2017 labour campaign could win where 2019 labour campaign failed, therefore Starmer for leader?

I think you are getting the logic of the metaphor backwards. Some people want egg and chips, and for them double egg and chips is a good deal.

But no amount of extra egg is going to reach the people who want bacon, or beans, or for the cafe to be open earlier, or for the cook to have a few less visible stains on his apron.

And none of that means reducing the amount of egg and chips on offer.

Or in other words, Labour’s economic policies are more or less right; it’s the other stuff that needs work.

I think you're giving the original metaphor too much credit. It goes "egg and chips went down badly in 2015, double well in 2017 and triple badly in 2019, so we should not offer quadruple next time"

I'm saying that the conditions of the elections were different enough to make that a stupidly simplistic analysis.

And I'm not at all sure what you mean by your extension of the metaphor. Are you making an argument of your own?

I've noticed a lot of media silence about RLB compared to Starmer, Phillips, and compared to Corbyn in 2015.

I think they're hoping that she just goes away. At any rate shittalk is better than silence.

It's weird because according to the groan he both attacks her but hedges his bets:

quote:

The one that I worry about - but I don’t know what she stands for - when I look at Rebecca Long Bailey, she’s really the continuity candidate. She stands for Corbynism in its purest sense. And that’s perfectly legitimate but we have lost two elections with that play.

But he also acknowledged that, when Long Bailey does announce her campaign, she might adopt a different line.

She hasn’t said anything yet; as far as I know she has not formally announced and it might be that she chimes a different note in her opening bid and that she wants to take the party in a different direction and she’s very candid about what went wrong, in which case then she’s in quite a good position to shift things around. But I think it’s fair for me to reserve judgment.

The cafe is the Labour Party, the customers are voters, and egg and chips are policies that are liked by the working class without putting off anyone else. Bacon is racism. Beans are the mysterious missing ingredient.

And if would say saying that we do have enough information to predict that offering quadruple egg and chips, and making no other changes, will be a losing strategy. Admittedly, It probably won’t lose as badly as taking egg and chips off the menu and serving quiche. But to actually win, we need to find the beans

They're not voting themselves out of a job. The Tories will be voting Labour MPs out of a job. Sure, a few Tory seats will go as well, but either they'll be members who plan to stand down after the current parliament or they'll be promised parachutes into the seats of others who are.

Had to deal on friday with someone gloating that the tories will invest in the NHS and the north and that will kill off labour and then got really annoyed that I was happy that labour policies were going to be enacted (I know it's a lie but it felt good to be smug in return).

In a similarish vein - I want to spend this year actually helping people who are going to be hosed over by the tories but is it actually possible to do without papering over the cracks in society? I'm worried that successful charity work has always been able to hide goverment malpractice and now even foodbanks are used as an argument that things are fine because people chip in and help each other. It sounds horrible but I'm struggling to how to express this properly - would these proposed activist-run parallel structures prevent/reduce tory voters realising how badly they hosed up?

assume someone's briefed them that the tories are going to announce this as policy soonish (but of course no protections for wages and only as the final measure to keep unemployment figures low)

I know exactly how you feel. Half of me thinks we all need to pull together and make sure the vulnerable are ok, but then the other half thinks this will cover up that despite the increase in UK debt of about £1bn or whatever it is since tories got into power, it patently hasn't been spent on public services.
Also, I worry about relying on Lord & Lady Bountiful to address the need via charitable donations will give rise to 'the deserving and undeserving poor' - or 'do what we say or no food for you'.
