Also their official parts ordering website has Paypal as it's only payment option (and the website is so broken the pay now button sometimes doesn't show up!). END RANT (for now)

So, if I were to run the '90min Cycle' once a month when I run some descaler (water here is very, very hard) through it, then it should keep it internally clean and help the lifespan? And some thread-related stuff so it isn't just me getting a free masterclass about dishwashers: Worked in a company and there was a manager that was pretty much universally disliked and especially by me. On my last day, I happened to share a kitchen with him and notice that he'd make his coffee and then leave the teaspoon in the sink (rather than quickly rinsing it for reuse). Confirmed to me on the spot that my judgement was right and he was indeed a complete c-word.

Goddamnit. I've been testing out a new GPO to override corporate's sleep settings and add our own for a few use cases; we want an hour and they want 15 minutes. The system is in an OU with inheritance blocked and just our 1 hour GPO applied. It says it gets our GPO. System power settings show the 1 hour setting. drat thing blanks and locks the screen after 15 minutes no matter what I do; which includes checking BIOS settings and updating the BIOS. I pull it from the domain, check power settings to verify the one hour setting, and it's still there. And the drat thing still locks up after 15 minutes. At least it isn't a GPO issue. I update the drivers and it's still ignoring the actual sleep settings. gently caress me, I have to escalate to HP support.

In our case, nope. The majority of people in the office have laptops, sorry if you need to undock during a power outage! It just adds another cost and support issue down the road. Our call center and IT infra admin area circuits are on the generator, as are obviously the network closets and datacenter.

GPOs can be enforced to ignore blocked inheritance. You miiiight be able to get around that by setting local group policies, but that's an inevitable mess. Talk to your AD admin up the chain? Edit: If system power settings show the 1 hour setting, it's probably not enforced. Not sure, it's a new building in a new office park so I'm not sure what the power is like. Swapping out batteries and troubleshooting bad $75 UPS units seems like more trouble than it's worth. Literally nobody here uses a laptop at their desk. But if the power even blinks, all of our ovens, laser, robets, etc go down so we're hosed anyway. On a side note I get to go spend like 2 hours waiting in line for a drug test for the new gig tomorrow. I liked it better when you just went down to Qwest, pissed and left.

Not only is looking after those things an unecessary faff, they are surprisingly annoying when you have to move a desktop PC around - they get in the way of things and quite heavy when you have to lift them at an awkward angle.

See if you can budget a generator for the building instead, sell it as cost-efficiency on keeping everything running with one reliable device instead of several hundred points of failure.

Still no, though. Don't bother unless you have frequent cuts - these days stuff is surprisingly resiliant to unexpected power offs - it's not like it takes 10mins to boot up and chkdsk and you've lost 4 hours work anymore. And if you do any frequent cuts, your first priority should be getting emergency lighting in the bathroom cause you don't want to be sitting in there when the lights go out.

Is there a service where I can arrange for someone with local knowledge to order internet connectivity to a new office? I know the UK market really well, but buying MPLS from our usual provider to e.g. Hungary is needlessly expensive if I just need fast Internet access, and it's going to perform like crap for breaking out to the Internet anyway - I could do with someone who is going to handle the language barrier and help us avoid taking out service with some completely shithouse provider like Windstream.

At my old job, each desk had a UPS, but in three years, I don’t think they were ever needed. So in practice, what it meant was that one would have a fault and start beeping somewhere on the floor and make everyone cranky until someone found it and shut it off (because, naturally, it would be at the desk of one of the people who were never, ever at their desk).

Back when I was a sysadmin for an entire org we put individual UPS' in at every desktop at our main office and it was fine. We had a couple power outages a year and while our server room was on generator, the rest of the building wasn't. I'm in QA, and today I was spending the whole day running a series of tests on a prototype. The tests started out fine, but after a while the results started to look almost like random noise, instead of the nice curve I was expecting. I started to get worried, cause the timelines are getting pretty tight on this project. While I was preparing the data to show to my boss, I glanced at the prototype... ...and saw a blown ferrite bead. One quick fix with a soldering iron, and everything is back to normal. Except for an entire day wasted, of course.

It's my soon to be ex-boss. His response: PHP code: That is one of the reasons that I don't like it. I spent too much time trying to decipher PHP_DEV_THAT_LEFT's code and when he has multiple %s values in the string it makes it harder to determine how his parameters are being used. This is exaggerated when you don't have a solid handle on the data structure.
