So if RLB wins, will the Jessanistas accept it or continue to undermine, slag off and generally do their best to divide Labour?

Of course, there'll be something they'll come up with as to why they can't support RLB. Even if it's just "she's not Jess Phillips, the nation's sweetheart". Though to be honest if Jessflaps loses the leadership election I wouldn't be surprised if she fucks off to the Lib Dems to run in their leadership election.

Just the last six days?

Did the internet ever come to a conclusion on how to deal with persistence of media/information from the 1920s etc, now it's a century later? Nobody gave a crap about the 1880s in 1980 because they hadn't managed to weaponise nostalgia yet but throwing a roaring 20s party won't ever be the same again.

E: Oh god what are you doing talking to the Spectator. Yes there's arguments to be made that the culture of the white working class does not place the same emphasis on educational attainment as more 'motivated' immigrant families but not like this. Not the spectator.

To be clear the bolded bit is the guy from the spectator, and she appears to be making the point that immigrant families push their kids to do well in education (which she thinks is good) a lot more than native british families do, which she attributes as a white working class problem, seemingly drawing off her experience with her mother.

Which I mean I disagree with on the basis that educational attainment is or should be important, to the extent that unless you get a shitload of it it's not gonna help you and requiring everyone to get loads of it is bad and not something we should encourage. I also don't really like boiling down social problems to some weird family morality thing.

Whether she's describing an actual trend or not I've no idea.

Article is also from january 2018.

It's pulling the 'model minority' poo poo which is not exactly progressive, and in a paper that loves fascists.

However if any other group than white boys was performing like this

then the usual lot would be pretending to sip whiskey and polish their skulls talking about genetic inferiority, so it's very strange that in this instance they all came out with "white males, the true persecuted minority" with no further analysis :iiam: so I can see why it might be fun to poke that nest.

At the risk of sounding disrespectful towards the victims, to me they are the bigger part of this story than Sinaga's use of drugs.

I've read and listened to a lot of true crime podcasts and stories. And as part of my job, I have had a ton of experience with crime and the victims of crime.

What Sinaga did is very much straight out of the play book of all serial rapists. (In fact I wouldn't be at all surprised if he read about them.)
The difference was his targets all seemed to be non sex worker men.
His approach (go to an isolated man. Offer assistance, bring him to back to his home.) These are all things that women have been warned to avoid all their lives. But men don't get that advice.
Even the described aftermath of the crimes are one that women would end up reporting/being suspicious of (since it's a huge fear for all women.)
With Sinaga, he picked a group that wouldn't recognize the signs of what had happened. (This is borne out by how many never knew they had been the victims of crime until they were told by the authorities.)

Even taking into account his use of G (which rapists have been using on women and men since the 90's and much earlier with other substances. ) had he been targeting women, I think he would have been detected much sooner.

It's basically a toxic masculinity thing - you might worry about getting into a fight in the pub car park, but how to avoid situations like the victims of this oval office is just not something you ever have to learn, because men are big and strong and only women have to worry about getting taken advantage of.

If there's a positive to take from this it might be that men become a little bit more aware of the world around them and realise that maybe you should make sure your mate's got home OK instead of just waving him off into the night - which might even encourage a bit more empathy with and support of female victims of rape.

Nothingtoseehere
Nov 11, 2010

I'm not sure that awareness even is a positive - fear and paranoia about rape will be in your mind vastly more than actual risky situations, especially for men. Stressing out over a unlikely scenario might be more harmful than awareness of that scenario, and I want a world where no one has to keep fears of rape in the back of their mind, not one where straight men has to like women do today.

OwlFancier
Aug 22, 2013

A world where everyone understands the reality of those fears is more likely to move towards being a world where nobody has to, than one where the dominant group lives in ignorance of the reality of life for the majority of the population.

The main thing about the Sinaga situation is that it's a great case to staple to the forehead of any twat who says things about women deserving it because they were drunk. It's horrible that you have to go that far to get these people to actually feel empathy but there it is.

Also go RLB, the politics of Corbyn and the anger of Skinner, just what Labour needs.

Many years ago when I, a man, was 19 I was thrown out of opium in Edinburgh for being a drunk state, and because the people I was there with were in a loving nightclub I could obviously not get through to them. Long story short there was this middle aged bloke just sitting there in his expensive merc outside the club (in retrospect a classic sketchy character - all greasy slicked back hair, gold chains, and slightly too many shirt buttons undone), and while I'm standing outside working out what to do he leans out and offers to give me a ride. I was steaming and cold and briefly considered it like a total dumbass but thankfully just then one of my friends appeared looking for me then got the others and we moved on.

Now he might well have just been Scotland's sleaziest taxi driver, but the car was unmarked so I'm doubtful. And if not what the hell is this guy doing just idling in an expensive car outside nightclubs in the early hours offering lifts to random drunk men young enough to be his son? I occasionally remember this and as I've gotten older I've become increasingly convinced (and troubled) that I might have actually quite narrowly avoided being assaulted or worse.
