I think this was Iran’s effort to retaliate but leave us an out. The fact that we apparently saw them setting the missiles up and let them launch gives me hope that this was kind of allowed to give both sides a chance to save face. Either that or we wanted an excuse to go ham on them. Trumps silence tonight suggests either scenario could be true.

And the truly dangerous moments that there were, like the Soviet false alarm that we had launched on them in ‘83, and later that year the Soviets thinking our Able Archer exercise was a real prelude to a first strike, we were simply blissfully unaware of. So you just sort of went through life knowing that it was a possibility, but it wasn’t something you sat around and thought about all the time, if that makes sense.
