Or the Iranian military is very well aware that the first people on the ground would be the Rangers, who specialize in taking over airports and airfields, and who arrive in big planes that would look like a passenger plane on radar. Especially so if the flight was delayed and the flight plan wasn't updated, so it looked like there shouldn't have been a plane at that place, at that time. Which is prime fodder for an itchy trigger finger and/or an officer making a bad decision. Hanlon's razor does apply, without completely ruling out malicious action. That's the thing, the Ukranian plane was basically new and had just had its maintenance check a couple of days before, so I don't think it's simply a mechanical failure, as lovely as Boeing is at designing and building planes, and even if the engine model used in the 737-800 is a bit crap. Again, I attribute it to an accident of incompetence, rather than outright malice. What's the reasoning for the US to gently caress up a random plane from Rwandair immediately after the Ukranian plane, on an airplane model with a previously rather clean record? A Ukranian airliner in Iranian airspace being mistaken for a US military plane. Versus a Rwandan airliner sitting on a runway in Israel. Totally the same thing.
