From the New World is criminally underrated and it's also the perfect honeypot, because there's tons of anime tubers who complain about the ritualized homosexuality in the anime being as awkward and unsexy as possible (like actual irl adolescent relationships), while preferring the manga which is just straight porn.

A lot of people hate it because they can't recognize that it's a story about growing up as a First Worlder who acclimates to their society even knowing how hosed up it is - and the racialized colonial subjects who rise up against the order you ultimately benefit from are the only real heroes. The historical development of imperialism informs the context of the entire story.

It's one of a handful of stories where the source novel is elevated by the anime while the manga is complete trash. Do not read or even look at the manga, I'm begging you.

It’s hunger games level garbage. The show stinks

always irritated as hell that things fall apart is considered the definitive achebe work because the main characters are all half naked dudes chucking spears which is like the one aspect of african culture youd think high schools would try to avoid overemphasizing

Yes the underage protagonist is sexualized to hell and back but hear me out, she's actually fairly loving badass? she quite kicks some rear end from time to time? so it's like not problematic at all?

It's anime skeez taken to a ridiculous level but she brutally beats the poo poo out of someone almost every single episode. Also there's the time the antagonist goes full Raiden and beats the poo poo out of people while butt naked wielding only a weaponised toenail extension.

Kinda like Panty and Stocking but slightly less of an open pisstake (also Panty and Stocking if you count the side manga has the protagonists fight monsters made of literally every bodily fluid)

this is a really bad argument

the sexualization in Kill la Kill is played up so ludicrously that it becomes self-parody. it's not really horny at all. it's like popping a boner at Bugs Bunny dressed up like Brunhilde

There's never so much horny that at least some of the audience won't still have boners, but they sure as hell made an effort. Kinda like Bayonetta.

A lot about Panty and Stocking makes sense when you learn they got the idea for it when drunk in a hotel room in the US and saw Drawn Together on TV.

idk I guess it's sort of like how people interpret CATS as being horny when really it's been spayed & neutered, but people can't tell the difference because litheness is automatically equated to horniness. I am certain that the performers themselves were extremely horny, like athletes at an olympic village. But the work itself just ain't.

so has anyone been watching you i finished the first season today and its legitimately fascinating how the show cant make up its mind whether its a murderous stalker thriller or a romantic comedy this contrast is intentional incredibly enough the main character is the one who keeps going back and forth on the subject so often it seems like the conclusion could be going either way

beyond the genre elements the other intriguing factor is how the shows a pretty blunt look at the causes and enabling factors involved in toxic relationships a big part of what makes the protagonist so undeservedly sympathetic is that hes observing other people acting in extremely lovely destructive behavior thats debatedly even worse than what he does but they get away with it because theyre careful to frame it in socially acceptable ways they can easily rationalize

the show is a murderous stalker thriller with comedic touches, just like dexter had funny stuff in it and the sopranos was practically a dramedy
that doesn't mean the shows themselves are portraying serial killers and mafiosos as good people
I think people get mixed up with "you" because of the MC's internal monologueing which shows how delusional he is, like when he's talking about a bad breakup with a former girlfriend when it was him trying to kill her and she managing to escape from him, or him talking about how he's given up on love and it's amazing how he keeps running into this new girl but he keeps resisting her until succumbing blah blah blah and then the show explicitly shows his inner monologue was all lies and he stalked her and slithered into her life like the psycho he is
ironically, people are doing exactly what they shouldn't and what the show is supposed to convey to them not to do - taking a serial killer at face value

the text might not be horny but i cant see how the performance of cats isnt the most horny theatre kid thing ever

i think you encourages ambiguous readings in part because its not clear the guy is a serial killer hes constantly going wait why the gently caress did i do that what was the next step every time he escalates because hes struggling to make things fall in line with his internal narrative and he cant kill anybody unless hes hyped himself up to believe that theyre at a high enough level of evil to justify it his internal monologue notes at several points that what he was doing would be a hell of a lot easier if he could just do it cold bloodedly without having to think about it first

its a neat contrast with salinger and ron because they do the exact same thing salinger gets nastier and bitchier whenever beck shows enough signs of improving self esteem that maybe shell tell her to just go gently caress off while we watch ron go from angry yelling man to helpful neighbor punching man to girlfriend punching man to kid punching man any time the people around him have breached another level of not respecting his authoritah

Doktor Avalanche
Dec 30, 2008

ok, fair enough, he's not a serial killer in that he wants to kill people and derives enjoyment from that, he's "just" a serial stalker and kidnapper who also has an impressive bodycount
the show is giving you everything you need to put together that this is a bad man, but people keep pushing corner puzzle pieces in the middle and blaming the show for that

edit: for god's sake, he's free and clear at the end of season 2, he could just live a boring rich life but he sees a loving hand through a crack in his fence and he's off to the races again

personally i thought the fact that candace is not only alive but somehow complicit in one or more of joes past crimes was a pretty good twist but im going to be extremely annoyed if season two is just the exact same thing all over again

was honestly kind of surprised joe survived the first season at all it felt like the final showdown could have gone down either way and there would certainly be plenty of plot left over for the other characters to clean up even if joe wasnt in the picture anymore

Too fuck to drunk

the only good anime is stuff from the 80s / 90s that was unambiguously good guys kicking the poo poo out of unambiguously bad guys (like FotNS and DBZ) and also Akira because i saw that as a pre-teen and it was the craziest poo poo i had seen up to that point in my life. I'll also take the first two arcs of Jojo where it's dudes punching vampires and nazis because they can breathe special, but i lost interest when it turned into Persona

edit: i can't remember if devilman was good or problematic but i liked it when i read it years ago
