Damnit Steve, you know I'm a sucker for Back to the Future references.
I just finished my playthrough, and ooh man was this good.

While I loved the game I don't think I'd play through it again with different attributes, it just wouldn't have the same appeal to me as this first playthrough. I'm curious about some of the things I missed.
I'll spend some time reading through the thread but in case anyone wants to answer any questions that would be great.

Was there much more to the Deserter? It seemed pretty cut and dry that he was the one who shot the mercenary. I was able to find out that he also killed the former union leader. But there was also the fact that the Phasmid was there. I failed the red check approaching it so I don't know if there was any more information to gleam off of it there

I also wanted to know more about Klaasje, I was able to get her to point me to Ruby but I didn't arrest her (although I immediately realized that was a bad idea), she ended up leaving before the mercenary showdown which went spectacularly bad for me, I didn't have my gun and wasn't able to difuse the situation. I was wearing armor though and it seemed to protect me from the first shot. In the end most of the Hardie boys didn't make it but I think I might have saved Kim by warning him? I'm not sure

Then there's Ruby, I feel like I definitely missed some things here. After encountering her I was able to convince her not to kill herself by letting her go. But she never came up again, I don't know if she was still around and I just didn't find her.

And finally the Church: Other than kicking out the dudes trying to setup a drug lab there I never really got any more info on this "hole in the world". Was it connected to anything? I have a feeling it's related to this "pale" thing? I had no idea that this was how this universe worked until the Pines rep told me about it, pretty terrifying stuff but I didn't really get much more into it other than that.

edit: Some pages back someone mentioned a dice maker? I never saw anyone like that. Did I miss like an entire section of the map or something?

Hoo boy, you missed quite a bit, actually.

There's a little more to be learned about the Deserter if you talk to the Phasmid, but mostly it's just an incredibly cathartic and moving scene. Definitely worth trying that check again, since it's so close to the end. It's a lot easier if you agreed to be doused with pheremones earlier.

You can't really defuse the situation with the mercenaries, the best you can do is still like four people dying. And you definitely saved Kim by warning him. Klaasje being around doesn't affect that scene, she just hides in her room IIRC.

Ruby runs for the hills if you let her go. She never shows up again.

There is like a big long quest involving the church that might save the whole city of Revachol, possibly the whole archipelago. Or at least delay the inevitable dissolution into the Pale, which is a huge element of the world that is only revealed if you a) internalize the thought Jamais Vu and b) talk to Joyce about the other topic that will bring everything together. You have to do it without Kim, but you can just ask him to step aside for a minute. This opens up a bunch of new dialog with other people, and is also important for the church questline.

Those raver kids are alright, don't be so harsh on them, basically.

There is also a big quest in the Doomed Commercial Area that leads to you finding the dicemaker. She gives you a lot of information about the building and the other companies that were there, and will also sell you dice that do various mysterious things.


Not fully spoiling it because it's worth seeing some of this stuff for yourself.

But for that to truly happen, and that can be easy to miss if you are leftward, what you totally should do is say the "I can't do this" option, which leads Rhetoric to say "well, that's it, communism is done. Logic and others will chime in justifying no, and then it happens:

Disco Elysium defends THAT. It defends the ideal. Both sincerely and full of heart and with lots of humor and wit. Communist Harry has a lol-worthy response about what to do with the Pale when you learn about it: "a powerful adversary that can be only stopped with tremendous communism", or something along these lines.

The funnier thing is that he is kinda right. If we are to consider the Pale the immense, completely impossible weight of postmodern history that crushes our lives into a never-ending Now because it robs ourselves of future, the Ideal is exactly what can provide some form of fighting back. It gives a new perspective; fundamentally, a new point of view, where a future is not only possible but viable.

Or, consider it thus: if we take some literary liberty and push things a bit more, isn't the Pale the ultimate form of Reaction, the whole of human past coming at us impossibly, robbing us of the present time until it finally drowns us away and finally the very concept of future is done? To become vapor, forever.

The best thing? The game hints at the Ideal being the necessary force to do so. I couldn't get the Insulindian Miracle thought description out of my head. I think I finally got it.

The cool thing is that every fascist is different.

The lorry driver is just a lazy piece of poo poo with some half assed monarchism and race theory, he just likes the idea of casual cruelty and unearned superiority. He's just a powerless bully.

Measurehead has worked extraordinarily hard to perfect his mind and body, and thinks he's at the forefront of new master race. But he is still completely subservient to the mostly white socialist union and his Semenese supremacy means he can't start a popular movement. His ambitions are the whole world, but he will never be anything more than a bruiser or gang leader.

Rene is a fossil, and remembers the good old days when Revachol was a glorious world power where the gays are closeted, the foreigners subjugated and the king a cocaine golem. From his point of view, the world went to poo poo and he stayed the same. He gets charity from the socialist union, but still maintains an unbreakable aura of bastardry that fascinated the deserter.

Gary is a passive, nonaggressive weenie. He's into obscure historical bullshit on a cultural and aesthetic level. He hides this because he knows it's unpopular and will probably get him beaten up. When he calls Kim Yellow Man he breaks down and rationalizes a new position by invoking how Seolite naval officers stayed loyal to the king, so Kim is one of the good ones. He's almost like a synthesis between Rene's monarchism and Measurehead's science, but in a completely useless package.

the rise of fascism, historically, meant the destruction of various constitutional monarchies. they are a political contradiction in terms in many ways. the fascists and the communists in revanchol are both anti-monarchist--anti-liberal, anti-moralist--and both favour revancholian independence; but on the basis of different political principles.

I've somehow managed to get thoughts to stop internalizing while on the island by continually stopping and re-starting the internalization process, but I'm not sure how to replicate the effect.

Thank you both! I think I knew this at one point and forgot it. And, it turns out, changing the save file to give me the precarious world from the start was easy to do.

Even funnier is the payoff when you find a replacement boule as a shot put ball from the nearby failed gym.

That’s in question. The game asks you to find out. It includes the area with the bookstore though. If it even exists.

Talking to the phasmid is also super critical. I know why its locked behind a check, but not doing it really feels like you lose on one of the most magical and uplifting moments of the game.

sometimes, even when a dialogue option is darkened, events in the game can cause new options can appear nested underneath it

and theres no way to know without clicking into that dialogue option at a later time to see. i think there should be some indication when this happens, but there isnt

It is 2 am. I've been to every available npc I can think of, including the pawnshop, evrarte, the capitalist lady, everyone. I think it's glitched.

Edit: I even completed the autopsy in its entirety (I believe).

before being called the cape of good hope it was called cape of the storms

disclaimer: I know jack poo poo about seafaring, I am just remembering stuff from history books

so basically most of the coast is rocks, then you have a narrow strait where you are relatively safe from the open sea, however, it is the convergence point of the southern atlantic and indian ocean currents, which frequently causes poo poo like 4m-5m tall waves at speeds around 50km/h one on top of another (that was a google)

so it is like get pushed to the open sea and lol you are done or be thrown into the land where most of it is jagged stone

Unhelpful for your specific situation, but I would suggest always sorting out your sleeping arrangement much earlier in the day. frex, the pawn shop shuts at some point if you were needing to use it. It wouldn't surprise me if a bunch of stuff gets weird in the code at 2am.

Keep a few manual saves going to limit frustration.
