There's another in Greensborough, but the wind's probably pushing that away from us at the moment.

It's the equivalent of someone who earns 50k p/a giving 5c and has been beaten as a donation by people with far less. Amazon is as big a polluter as there is, this is an obviously callous PR move.

Apparently, smoke from the bushfires is about to arrive back in Australia after travelling around the world. In the 1880s after the Krakatoa eruption global temperatures fell by nearly half a degree as a result of all the muck thrown into the sky. I suppose the scale is currently a bit different, but I wonder if we’ll see a similar effect as the fires continue. Paintings of the sky after the eruption (as seen from London, admittedly) look familiar.

I mentioned earlier I've got a mate up in Bundoora, that Greensie fire is in the exact same area as the fire that got her temporarily evacuated two weeks ago. I was up there last week to visit and gently caress me I didn't truly appreciate how close that fire got to burning regular suburbia until I was driving past giant black scorchmarks advancing over the hill in the park, the remains of spot fires that'd burned through vegetation on traffic islands and the playground on the opposite side of the street. Some streets were still roped off by the cops as the fire had come through and gotten within metres of torching some poor bastard's house. The firies deserve a lot more than they're being given for stopping that one from doing any serious damage.

Speaking of respirators; If you're in need of a mask, Amazon has these for cheap at only $12.50 a pop. Reusable, comes with two PM2.5 filters and a sealable storage bag, and takes the standardized charcoal filters you use used in half the market for these things. Amazon'll also do same-day delivery if you're in/around Melbourne, but it's juuuust past the deadline for that to get it today (3pm). You can also get a 34-pack of N95 filters here to go with it if you want, but it's probably overkill. Neddy Seagoon fucked around with this message at 05:13 on Jan 14, 2020 |
