That’s cute how they were so optimistic. I wonder what they’re hiding about the thylacines. And I can’t believe there’s nothing about Bigfoot or Sasquatch. Seconding Japan.

Much appreciated! I had low expectations about the genetics section after reading "pure sandy cats are always male" (nope, one colour coats are more common in, but not exclusive to, male cats). But it reads like the writers had a fairly good grasp of the topic for the time. The creationism part of evolution section was as expected, many decades later they tried to teach me the same thing in science lessons.

vortmax posted:Ooh I didn't think of him. Good one! thats honestly fascinating. this is obviously "before" everyone knew the nazis were the evilest fucks, so its mostly talking about hitler nazifying the churches and catholics getting more seats in his party. it also takes his purge of roehm at face value as it does with alot of the nazi poo poo. the Nuremberg race laws started in 1935 so i doubt would have anything about that. it also takes place before the started taking land back and the various preWW2 crises started popping up.

It is nice to see that anti-evolution arguments haven't changed in almost 100 years despite being thoroughly debunked.

Private Cumshoe posted:Well eugenics went about as expected I like how they actually were easy-going and informative with the books and bookbinding articles (except for the "modern books ain't got poo poo on the blackest ink and whitest vellum of ye olde tomes " line) and the details on the machines for folding and cutting the pages to be bound (except for the gold tooling which arrived late with NO originality ) And then it goes straight into "it [eugenics] endeavors to arrive at a satisfactory method of improving generally the mental and physical development of mankind ."

Good call on eugenics. Unlike evolution, which is presented as a dangerous idea, the only possible negative outcome of eugenics is that it might not work properly? loving Galton has a lot to answer for. Nice to see them acknowledge the importance of environment in development, which they did not in the genetics section.

The way parts of these things are written beautifully reminds me a lot of my early 20th-century book on weeds in which the author dunks on random plants with varying degrees of savagery in between actual informative details on them.
