I loved this part. I also loved how they played really loving ominous music even though it's our hero beating the pulp out of the villain and making our hero look a bit freaky in doing so

That's because we're seeing this from Overhaul's perspective, where Deku being a wrathful god who's done with his poo poo is the right approach, so enjoy the ominous music, terrifying lighting, and Overhaul probably having a few regrets before getting punched by a nuke

I really love Overhaul's expression in that detailed close-up. It so thoroughly conveys the complex feeling of just having had your flashback-fueled determined villain powerup swatted aside by a highschooler like the insignificant bullshit it is.

Yeah it was a really different kind of punchman finale. The villain just keeps powering up and getting more and more determined but Deku is so completely stupid powerful that it just doesn't matter and it becomes like a slow dawning realization for the villain, that he is fighting something completely beyond him

Basically like Saitama vs Boros (which was also amazing despite being 100% one sided)

I'm a little surprised there is anything left of Overhaul after taking that punch square to the face. I guess the author didn't think Deku was mature enough for the heaviness of "Sometimes being a hero means taking a life." Or maybe he just didn't want to have to write the fallout to someone as sensitive as Deku killing someone.

It'd have been morbidly hilarious if Overhaul, for all of his talk about being the new AfO, got his face punched off by Deku here like the man himself.

He was still within Eri-zone so the punch was actually Deku saving his life.

All Might certainly as hell tried to kill All For One in their big battle where he got disemboweled.

I ended up putting the dub on as background stuff the other day and was surprised by how much I liked Lemillion and Overhaul in the dub.

Speaking of minor changes, I still like the manga translation for All Might's statement after the All For One fight. The anime uses "Next...it's your turn" but the manga was "You're next." I think that just flows better and carries more weight, but I can't put my finger on why

Maybe it's the poor pacing in the latter half that has me generally annoyed but this season has had all the hallmarks of a filler arc.

Aw, they should've left in Spinner's lines- it's part of his character.

They didn't punch it up like I had hoped but eh, they didn't make it look like poo poo either so alright then. There's a couple small details that bugged me though.

Nighteye hesitates for a moment in surprise (and it doesn't look like it was a pleasant surprise) when he reads Mirio's future. This got lost somehow. They really aren't looking close enough at the manga sometimes.

Shigaraki kills the driver of the ambulance. Also, I kinda feel like they should've focused more on the one keyframe they took from the manga. That was a real "whoa" moment and I think the manga captured it a bit better.

This is last two pages of the chapter covering that bit- with the space before the .jpg so anyone still using SALR or whatever doesn't see it unless they want to:

Yeah. See the cut away from Compress too. It wasn't clear at all that he actually used his power to cut off Overhaul's other arm. At least not without context from the rest of the scene. They were clearly not allowed to show too much blood in that scene.

Generally in the BDs anything that had to be dimmed for TV due to seizure risk (like the Overhaul punch) will be undimmed. Generally any linework/shading that wasn't done gets added, sometimes effects get fixed, and any post-animation censorship will get removed.

There might be some more blood, maybe some really short animation cuts (maybe the stuff around Overhaul's arms or when Nighteye gets impaled) get put back in, Toga will be actually nude, etc.

This was a common complaint of the arc in the manga as well, with the common descriptor being that it feels like a noncanon anime movie, complete with a one-time super powerup and a dangerous, high stakes villain organization that the audience has never heard of before.

This arc came about around the time of the first anime movie, which Horikoshi apparently heavily involved themselves in, that -when added to the usual hellschedule required of Jump artists - basically obliterated him physically, and that was further compounded by the fact that he's since said that the overhaul arc got a lot darker than he is generally comfortable with and that hosed with his ability to be creatively productive.

Luckily, the next arc is generally seen as being really good, so if overhaul hasn't done it for you then the rest of the season should have your back.

The highway attack scene wasn't quite as hype as it was in the manga, but I still really liked it a bit even if it was a bit more low key.

Oh hey, Overhaul's done. Now I can start watching this show again.

I remember a lot of "they'll fix all these problems in the anime" when the manga thread was discussing this arc. Huge bummer that it sounds like aside from making Deku vs Overhaul more visually interesting they really, really did not.

I think they did. The faster pacing was a real help here.
The only thing I didn't like was how they did the girls dirty by not expanding on that fight. Their initial encounter should have been more fleshed out.

Nighteye's ending was done fantastically though.
