I don't think it's unreasonable to wonder if there's a podcast about the Vietnam War that covered the time before America got involved

Inwards Empire 's episodes about Ngo Dinh Diem cover a lot on Vietnams early - mid 20th century history, there's only the first three episodes out yet though.

I do the Tom Fitton method of book reading where I just stare down the book until it gives up the info I need.
