MikeJF posted:They're basically a branch of the Asiatic wild dog. You can see the similarities to the closest of the domestic dog relations, probably the japanese dogs like Kai Ken or Shiba Inu. (A shiba really looks like a dingo that's had a very luxurious life) There are basically no new world or truly ancient dog breeds left that haven't been crossbred with European dogs. This includes breeds such as sled dogs, chihuahua, and the Carolina dog. The only exception is probably CTVT, an 11,000 year old dog that that asexually reproduces itself as transmissible cancer cells in modern dogs.

The Silver Snail posted:Hmm, I suppose you're right, a little toxin induced blood cell rupturing is a-ok. quote:Garlic belongs to the Allium family (which also includes onion, chives, and leeks) and is poisonous to dogs and cats. Garlic is considered to be about 5-times as potent as onion and leeks. Certain breeds and species are more sensitive, including cats and Japanese breeds of dogs (e.g., Akita, Shiba Inu). Toxic doses of garlic can cause damage to the red blood cells (making them more likely to rupture) leading to anemia. GI upset can also occur (e.g., nausea, drooling, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea). Other clinical signs of anemia can also occur including lethargy, pale gums, increased heart rate, increased respiratory rate, weakness, exercise intolerance, and collapse. Signs of garlic poisoning can be delayed and not apparent for several days. While tiny amounts of these foods in some pets, especially dogs, may be safe, large amounts can be very toxic. https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/poison/garlic/ I'm having trouble finding LD50 for some reason, but yeah, it's looking like "don't freak about accidents, but never on purpose" is probably the best policy for this one.

I've posted a few times about Augie, but it's been about 6 months since he was adopted! Just this week he started going twice a week to a doggy day care to help with his socialization, because he's had some issues interacting with other dogs that he's not familiar with. It's been a huge success, he's been accepted into "the pack" and seems to really enjoy his time there. Here he is checking out a new friend And here he is allowing a few new friends to check him out: When he gets home I'll give you one guess what his favorite activity is: Day 1: Day 2:

Malaysian flying foxes have a wingspan around 4.5 feet and I think they're the biggest. Still, pretty huge compared to the little ones we have around here. Fun fact, a lot of Old World megabats (and old world fruitbats in general) don't echolocate! They have good vision though.

A friend of a friend is a chiropterologist and boy howdy do I feel you there. I've never actually interacted with the bats myself (she mostly studies rabies and white nose syndrome transmissability in bats so most of the rescues she have can't have any casual human interaction) but she always has some good stories about them, they sound fun.
