They are mostly standard sizes (the ones listed above are the most common) but just not equated with "paper size". The international version is better as usual, but we don't just make up new arbitrary sizes willy-nilly, we mostly just stick to the same 4 or 5 arbitrary sizes.

but they all have different aspect ratios! How do you size stuff up and down? Just by cropping bits off sometimes?

Futurism was an art movement where dudes were all 'CARS ARE COOL AND THE PAST IS FOR CHUMPS. LET'S DRAW SOME CARS.'
Really the only truly annoying discrepancy are the two standard photograph sizes: 4"x6" and 8"x10": 4x6 is the same as the frame, but 8x10 is notably taller. Once you get above those the common sizes are almost all (or very close to) 4:3 ratio.

Also, poster-size is A2. :eng101: Of the many things the US does backwards, non-standard paper sizes sound the most frustrating, how do you deal with that?

I dealt with it by moving to Europe.

But yeah, the non-similar aspect ratios are difficult to deal with, but there are standard poster sizes in the US - they just aren't what anywhere in the rest of the world uses as standards.

It's this. The sizes I listed are the most common "poster size" frames that you can buy off the rack at a frame shop, and as mutata said, aren't based on sheet size.

Yup. Before I worked in the wide-format shop, I worked in a photo lab, and when people would want their photos enlarged (typically in the US printed as 3x5--not as common--or 4x6), we'd have to explain that they would lose some image once we started sizing up, and ask them how they wanted things cropped.

But now I work in commercial print and packaging, dealing with national AND international companies. You wanna talk about mind-bending poo poo, holy gently caress.

To be fair, I can totally get that as a fetish, having people draw you for money.

Calling it now; it's not a picture of him in the nude, it's a dick pick. And I totally get it as well, can you imagine the power move of having a wall of nothing but different artists' interpretations of your dick when you finally convince someone to come in?

Honestly, the freedom to slap a ridiculous rear end in a top hat Tax on it takes the sting out. It's not hell in the same way retail is, because I've got no management stopping me from fighting back.

I fully appreciated the rear end in a top hat tax on that one, yes. Considering there was a chance you'd have to draw a literal rear end in a top hat.

One of those round, concave dome ceilings in a church would be absolutely perfect for displaying the glory of goatse. Imagine raising your eyes to the heavens in reverence and staring straight into the abyss.

Real gold on the ring, a nice gloss impasto medium for the meat, as the choir sings its praises.

Actually, gently caress it, why limit it to 2D? If I've got a concave dome I could sculpt a 100' goatse. Truly, they shall be in awe of the magnificence of the lord.

e: I'm imagining a very nervous priest trying to give a sermon, sweating as he repeatedly glances at the groaning ceiling, loosens his dogcollar wondering how short he can cut the session.

I'm starting to see why it took so long to find a non-hideous photo of this child. The nicest one is where she looks vaugely suicidal, at least her mouth doesn't look like the sucking maw of an abyssal fishmonster on that one. She appears to think 'smile' means 'retract lips to warn off potential predators'

I'd post photos but that'd be unfair on the internet.

I'm trying to have a creative day today, I've been procrastinating too much on personal projects. Currently working on a dark fantasy story (with illustrations hopefully haha) which focuses on the redemption of the main characters. I've just managed to work out the angles I want to go with so my main aim is to get this all written out and expand on it today.
Not to mention I've got loads of art pieces I want to start and techniques I want to learn. Lol just need to get a grip and learn to cut lino.

I don't work in a creative industry (I'm a lab technician) so some times I really struggle with getting my brain in that mode, esp. after working. Does anyone else have that headache? First time posting so feel free to call me a moron.

I'm trying to get illustration and portrait work going as a job, so I'm working on two main projects, realistic-but-stylised portraits and apocalyptic illustration stuff. I'm awful for second-guessing myself, I think this is the first time I've got to a point where I know where I'm going with art. Mostly I just love making art, any sort, but it's hard to promote yourself as 'yeah, I'll do anything'. At the moment, I'm working on a gouache portrait of a very ugly child, trying to make them less hideous. What about you, what sort of art do you do?

I work in a lab, too. I used to have that problem until I started using my break time to physically remove myself from lab and to think about art in my surroundings: how would I draw/paint this?; what is aesthetically pleasing about this poster diagram? I also doodle a lot when there’s down time or catch up on what’s going on in the Creative Convention discord (come join us! https://discord.gg/BZg6KH)

My biggest hurdle is finding time to art. I’ve got a lot of things going on and they’re all high priority :(

Ah nice, that sounds amazing, esp. the apocalyptic illustration stuff! Is that a personal project? I've always enjoyed working with gouache so wishing you the best with trying to make the ugly child less ugo haha.
I mostly do ink illustration, I've done a lot of pet portraits as gifts and commissions but they're quite stylised rather than realistic. Everyone has always wanted me to do colour ones though which I feel I really suck at haha. I've always loved medieval woodcuts so I've been big into ink/crosshatching but I'm trying to build my skills in actually doing the cuts.
I'm just trying to get that spark back and get really lost in drawing, that's like my favourite feeling in the world man.

Ah I know I'm trying to do leaving the office more as it's such a stifling atmosphere. I've moved to a new place where have an open plan office which I've never experienced before and I'm not in the lab as much as I'd like it's such a strange feeling. I absolutely know what you mean with "finding the time to art". I remember I used to go through periods where that's all I would do all day is think creatively/do things and I've just not been arsed for the past few years. So weird because when I'm in the swing of it I love it haha
Cheers for the discord link! I actually might have a look sounds good!

I have been writing every day for a long while now, trying to improve my poetry. I don't have anyone to really critique my poems, however, and so I'm just mired in my own dumb poo poo. I hate that I don't feel like I'm improving, and every time I submit to poem dome or whatever it's like I'm just dumping garbage. After my pity party I actually did a deep dig and found an open mic that’s 20 min from my house; all the others have been like 1.5h away (I live in the sticks). I’m excited but nervous; I’ve never done an open mic before and I’m hoping to make some friends / critique partners without being a weirdo. I’m guessing grabbing someone and screaming “please accept me” is probably off the table, right?
