Just want to say thanks to whoever referenced Latchkey Kingdom in this thread, it was a charming discovery.

It has a lot of the idiosyncracies webcomics often have (the very unnecessary Xmas storylines stand out there) but it has a lot of heart, charming art, and honestly I could use some extremely webcomics content sometimes. It's on my read list now.

Yeah, that's a good one. I stopped following it as much when it started spending what felt like months at a time on comics about the patreon backers' OCs, who were always way less interesting than the comic's own characters, but I can't really blame the guy too much for that since they are, you know, financially supporting him and I'm not.

I think the patreon stories are all split off when you're actually reading through the archive, thankfully.

If the girl with a prosthetic snake for arms is a patron OC I'm extremely alright with this model. She's adorable, and the snake cult has been consistently charming.

I really have no idea how much input the patrons have, although the side comics do get a lot more into furry territory. If you get drawn into the webcomic enough to want more of that crazy worldbuilding, you can even shell out to buy the PDFs of the predecessor webcomic, 70 Seas.

I've seen plenty of comics do a thing of higher-effort main work interspersed with lower-effort short projects, I just get confused at how Latchkey Kingdom shifts the archives around so that you might not necessarily see the last comic put out when you hit the back button. Although maybe everything works differently now that it's switched hosts.

Also dang, I just realized that Jane used a snaketarian interjection in the last page, I wonder if she's properly a believer or just picked it up at daycare.

I loved the hell out of 70 Seas back in the day, but man it really ended on a weird wimper note. Never followed on with Latchkey Kingdom though. Did any of the story threads left hanging (ie the mission to rescue Nikol's missing sister) get resolved there, or was Psych just like "No, I'm done with this, move on"?

It's alternating on a weekly basis I believe. One week of "mainline" comics, followed by one week of "patron" comics, and repeat.

She's pretty dedicated to her job as the snake cult's minion, so I'd imagine she's at least mildly snaketarian.

There's a couple appearances from the 70 seas cast but it's not continuing that story at all.

I kinda figured. 70 Seas had an (author admitted) problem with sticking the landing on its arc endings, and that bore out for the comic as a whole, ending its final chapter like 3 pages after a climax to what felt like a side story instead of a final story act and then just leaving the field when literally one more chapter would have tied up the whole story. But it was clear that Psych's heart just wasn't in it any more at that point and he really wanted to get on with Latchkey, so I don't begrudge it too much.

Ninja girl (it's early and I can't remember names) is a recurring secondary character in Latchkey and part of Willa's friend group. She's had some character growth and change in Latchkey. The main pirate lady recently had a cameo, too.

I like the patreon comics, generally, since I think a few of the Patrons just tell Psych "I want a story about Stella and Harold!" And let the plot be up to Psych's discretion. I do wish they didn't constantly shift around in the archives or interrupt the main story every 5 pages or so though.

The whole "become my normal body again" seems to imply that whatever copy remains is transformed back into the original, non-split version, with her usual handedness. Alternatively she can just split again and kill the left-handed copy to go back to normal, who knows.

I wonder if that effect works on other things she tries cutting in two...

I mean, tbf, it seems like everyone else has basically an instinctual knowledge of their powers from the jump (of course I'm basing this entirely off the few flashbacks and Zoe knowing how to do her thing on her first night out, so I could be reading too much into things), it doesn't have to be a creepy origin. I mean, it probably is, buuuut...

I think there's some instinctual knowledge, but you also have to push boundaries to figure out what exactly you can do. Undine had to come up with ways to use her power beyond just the basics, like trying to do the water laser back when they were a full team. Zoe knew to shoot the things, but seemed surprised when they grew. Zoe also had a few weeks to go from getting her powers to going out at night to fight, and I get the impression that's probably not an unusual learning period, and the reason that other girl was upset is that Zoe wasn't like 'oh yeah just getting a hang of things before I kill monsters' but hesitating to say she'd go out at all. Hell, Steffi is apparently pretty bad at fully controlling her powers!

On the other hand, it's been implied that girls somehow pick their own abilities in their forgotten Dream, so beyond the obvious I wouldn't be surprised if they had some subconscious idea of what they asked for. The problem is Cassidy's power is a lot more abstract and harder to see than just manipulating water or punching hearts or shooting literal lasers. Maybe she had some idea that she had to use her scissors on herself, but I don't know if she knew what would happen when she did.

rannum

I suppose the optimistic take is she used her scissors on other things, saw she could split them in 2 sometimes and well one things leads to another.

Still very offputting though. No wonder Gabby's creeped out

Even putting aside how she learned how to do that as instinctual knowledge, if you subscribe to the idea that, in these sort of settings, that powers are usually related to the personality of the wielder, the fact that it works like this still kind of says scary stuff about them

And thinking about the uses, there could definitely be a "hell yeah two is better than one" thing with clones, but with the setup basically being pantomimed self harm, it's probably going to be more like one clone is regularly bait for the other, or sending one clone into bad situations knowing the other will be fine.

Tenebrais

The real question is whether the clones are individually sentient, or if she is perceiving through both at once. Because if it's the first, that means her power is that she can die without anyone being worse off.

That's kind of haunting, even if it is just the Star Trek Transporter Problem all over again.

And if it's the second, she probably ends up feeling quite a bit of pain as she sends one half out to kamikaze fight while the other stays back in safety, and potentially does this multiple times in a difficult fight. She knows each split regeneration wastes magical power, which implies she's tested how many times she can do this in one night.

It's an extremely useful power, but it's not a fun power.

Instinctual knowledge about cutting yourself in half maybe. But then do you also get instinctual knowledge about what happens when one half dies? If you don't know for 100% certain that it will work isn't that just as weird to test if not more? e: hopefully a lower threshold for getting hurt to merge than to actually die
