I just remembered that the worst airport is Charles de Gaulle in Paris. Instead of going through security then into a central departures hall with the gates coming off it, which at least is big enough to walk around and have a few different places to eat/drink/take sample squirts of £300 aftershave you have no intention of buying, they seperate everyone out into small unconnected clusters. We didn't realise it would basically be like sitting at the gate with a single little kiosk for refreshments, that was a fun two hours.

There are multiple health benefits to using squat toilets though. Other than general culture shock and squeamishness, it's kind of surprising that we haven't adopted them https://www.teachingnomad.com/discover-more/nomad-blog/item/257-asian-squat-toilet-vs-western-sit-toilet-the-down-and-dirty quote:1. Makes elimination faster, easier, and more complete. This helps prevent "fecal stagnation," a prime factor in colon cancer, appendicitis, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Really the thing we should've adopted from Asia wrt to pooping is the bum gun. Its a tiny hose you use to squirt your rear end when you've finished pooping. Means you use a lot less tp and gets your rear end much cleaner.

The weirdest thing about Singapore to me is that I find it consistently cheaper than the UK, even though cost of living indexes say otherwise. You can have a good restaurant dinner for 20 SGD (~10 pounds), MRT (underground) costs between 0.8 to 1.9 SGD (40p to about a pound) depending on the length of the trip, decent, if cheap, hotel can be found for ~60-80 SGD a night for a double room (30-45 pounds) and there's lots of cheap grocery stores (plus you can pop over to JB if you really want to be cheap), even rent isn't bad by Oxford/Edinburgh/London/Copenhagen standards if you don't mind staying in a cheap place, it's like 500-600 pounds a month for a studio. Could be that a lot of that is self-reported by expats who live the absolute most expensive lives. Though the cars are very expensive, that's definitely true.

Tried to rig one up in the current flat but couldn't fix it up with the relevant fittings and ended up breaking the electric shower. Also looked into buying one of those toilets with it built in the back but way too expensive and the tushy thing which looked good won't fit in the space I have. I have another idea but will have to wait a couple of months to get it fixed up.

Guavanaut posted:Which model is that? https://hellotushy.com/ It looks pretty simple to install (and they have UK adaptor - you can buy these tushy things on Amazon as well) however, it requires a fitting between where the water enters the cistern and the two way valve which diverts water to the bum gun bit. I do not have sufficient clearance between the bottom of the cistern and the panelling the previous owner of the flat put round it so I would need to pull the bathroom apart to fit it in which is outside my financial scope just now (if I don't want to have a bathroom that looks like a wreck for the next couple of years). The option I'm going to go for is to swap the two bath taps for a bath/shower mixer and then I can fit the existing valve I have to that (making sure that the tap I get will leave sufficient clearance between the outlet and the bathroom wall - this is what bust my electric shower trying to squeeze it in - lasted 24 hours before destroying the electric shower completely!) and basically rig up the system I had before which is a shattaf trigger hose on a flex with rotating joint (regular shower hoses just twist and break within a few weeks - source: me breaking shower hoses before buying a proper one). So basically about £80 or so on a new tap + cost of plumbing - I'm crap at DIY so I'm not doing it. Hoping my brother will do it at 'mates rates' next time he's down this way probably easter. Guavanaut posted:The Japanese robot toilet bidets are better than shattafs, because they don't get water everywhere. If you get a trigger head for the shattaf the water doesn't go everywhere. Though best to use with toilet seat up (and truly, self-closing toilet seats are the devil's work - another thing I have to change - how do gentlemen manage when the toilet seat closes on you while performing?) to avoid getting water leaking out between seat and top of bowl. Jaeluni Asjil posted:(if I don't want to have a bathroom that looks like a wreck for the next couple of years). Whoever previously designed it fit the shower into the corner of the sloping roof so I can't even stand up straight there, the shower head is fitted for someone about 5'4", and the splash zone includes the windowsill, which is fitted at a slight slope in the wrong direction to turn the window into a black mold farm. I'm really hoping I can save enough to rip the whole lot out in the next couple of years because it's the worst designed room and about the only bit I'm really not happy with. There's a lot to parse in this article, both good and bad, but I thought this was an interesting take even though there's an awful lot to disagree with. It seems to come from a Brexit & Blue Labour sympathetic position, so there's certainly plenty of arguable and downright infuriating assumptions and statements, but the account of centrism and its electoral failings in particular I thought was well made, and it's worth reading the whole thing to get a slightly different analysis that's critical of both liberal centrism and Corbyn-style leftism. Gray doesn't quite say this, but when he's talking about the New Labour project I think he touches on something that really doesn't get mentioned at all by people harking back to Blair: the tactic of directly and explicitly bringing the professional middle classes into your project only works when they aren't already your core vote. Labour's electoral coalition, and electoral problems, are not the same in 2020 as they were in 1992 (or 1987, or 1983) https://www.newstatesman.com/politics/uk/2020/01/why-left-keeps-losing quote:Why the left keeps losing
