I'd set a d-pad button, or maybe clicking a thumbstick, to 'draw/holster blaster.' If you have your blaster holstered, your bumpers and triggers are your force powers. If you have your blaster drawn, at least one of them (probably force pull) becomes 'shoot.'

I hadn't realized Outcast was on GC, somehow it slipped me by despite having that console. Still, that's about as clunky as I was picturing.

ninjahedgehog posted:

You could add a third Force power by pressing the triggers simultaneously, and even mix and match through some sort of wheel or pause menu like Mass Effect.

You'd definitely have to trim down the active powers, but I like this idea - I used push/pull for most of the game, but slow for trickier enemies and bosses, so I'd want a way to switch gears on the fly.

And yeah, you'd almost definitely have to have some contextual alternate controls for when your gun is drawn.

It's time to kick the tires and light the fires, Big Bird.

Even on keyboard Outcast and Academy were kind of clunky when it came to Force powers. The core problem is that there were way too many of them, so there wasn't a way to have all of them near your WASD and still have space for use, crouch, etc. Basically you'd have to either cycle through them like the GameCube, hunt and peck for the right key, or reassign your keybindings every playthrough so you've have easy access to the ones you picked.

This would be cool too, basically treating your blaster like another Force power. Every young Jedi hopeful must master the ancient techniques of Telekinesis, Telepathy, Psychometry, and Gun

Eventually with Outcast and Academy, I set the Force powers to sorta mimic what they used for Unleashed

Push on E
Grip on R
Pull on T
Lightning on Q
Heal on F
Mind Trick on Z
Speed on X

Never bothered using the number keys for weapon switching, since why do that when the lightsaber exists
Unless you really, really, really wanna snipe a guy on the other side of the map, in which case fine, fair enough

Also disabled the HUD because it takes up too much space (cg_draw2d 0) and haven't looked back since - what other game lets you do stupid things like having Lando duel Darth Vader?

gently caress, Outcast all you had to do was mouselook to dice people up with saberrealisticcombat. Thats something thats really changed in games, eh. I guess that was still a more technical kind of code compared to your A B Up Down whatever, but with everything being online and such now, you dont have much stuff like that you can gently caress with without mods or trainers.

I found Force Unleashed to be so bland and forgettable. I hope thats not how this ends up for me, but I find I almost have to convince myself to play it over the other games I have on the go at the moment.

The lightsaber was a secondary weapon in TFU and only really required for boss fights

Otherwise you just Push, Grip, and Lightning everything standing in front of you

The tone down they had to use on human enemy deaths is jarring for me. I get that they can’t have decapitation or stormtroopers falling in half with the rating they want but after some of the satisfying ways bugs and critters get lopped in half doing a massive lightsaber combo and the stormtrooper just falls over with a tiny line across his chest is anticlimactic. Heck they showed darth maul getting cut in half

No game is violent enough for my liking. Still waiting on a Soldier of Fortune sequel

I really want to like this game but the hand holding with the enemies changing colors and everything else, the needless amount of extra animations for every loving thing you do.

Also I realized why I was sucking at combat,I wasn't using the delayed second attack enough

Delayed second attack is amazing. Really any move outside an established rhythm is great, the AI is very pattern based and doing a no move dodge or fast attack in the middle of a slow enemy attack is great because you get some damage in without having to gently caress with the block strength bar.

Granted, you'd need a good six or seven different takes, but given how a lot of Star Wars games have [several minutes of voicelines solely dedicated to people screaming in terror, I guess that wouldn't be anything new

Truth is game rigging is more difficult than it looks pls stay ded
Whoever said this feels like an Arkham Asylum that could lead to an Arkham City is dead on, it's fine and pretty strong in a lot of ways and has a lot of potential for a more expansive sequel.

A lot of stuff feels disappointing though. The chest rewards for exploring the environments are just dogshit, endless new bits of lightsaber a player will probably never use or ponchos that broadly look a bit rubbish. The enemy variety is pretty lacking and it seems like less than maybe a third of them have some trick to beating them that feels satisfying, the rest are just doing the same actions and it feels almost random if I win without taking a hit or lose some healthbars. And playing the second hardest difficulty the boss lightsaber fights never felt skillful, it was always beating them by attrition or them having a weird specific weakness like Trilla has to Push. And no fast-travel is just bad in this, the environments are already a weird hodgepodge of different locales with arbitrary and unintuitive corridors between them, the no fast travel is 100% just whacking an extra hour-and-a-half on the average critical path playthrough.

Oh, I absolutely like what they did with Cere/Trilla. That's why I said "strange/interesting." I'm just kind of surprised by it. In general the core plot/character beats of this game dramatically outperformed my expectations from a contemporary Star Wars video game.
