There's already one of those though, the X100F. I've been wishing the thing was wider since the moment I got it, I can always crop if need be but if I'm in a tight space [shops and restaurants specifically] I just can't get some shots with 35mm equivalent.

Can always get a WCL-100 for it, that gives you a 28mm equivalent. I really like mine, even if it adds some bulk to the camera.

Look, I'm not saying that it's the largest camera in existence, but the GFX 50S is comically large. It normal-people hands it looks like it was made by Tonka or Fisher Price.

Here it is next to this thread's darling street cameras, the X100F and GRIII.

Both of those cameras are designed to slip snugly into a bag. Hell the GR3 can fit into a jeans pocket.

I'm still struggling with my A7iii's menus a little bit, even after watching a bunch of good youtubes and reading guides. I suspect the material just isn't sticking with me since I've got a bunch of other things on my mind right now. Can I get a sanity check: Would something like this be possible?

Right now I mostly do street/travel photography and I also dabble in studio photography with off camera flash. At the end of the day I want:

Street mode: AP, EVF exposure preview on, some preset AF mode I haven't decided on yet.
Studio mode: M, EVF exposure preview off, probably some other preset AF mode.

Now I know I can assign some settings to the "custom settings" positions on the mode dial, but is it possible to assign those permutations of settings to those dials? I'm iffy because:

- I think I can set most of the "studio mode" settings to one of the custom settings position on the dial but how would I tell the camera that it's now in full manual mode other than sliding the same position to "M", negating being on the custom settings position.
- If I do manage to somehow get this working, if I slide back into AP mode, will it retain the settings from the custom settings position?

At the end of the day I just want the camera to be able to flip between street and studio mode as described above without having to go through dozens of menu entries and the more I try to read about it the more confused I am. I am either making this way more difficult than it needs to be (likely) by just missing something super simple, or Sony has made this way more difficult than it needs to be (... almost as likely).

I feel like I articulated this terribly, hopefully it makes sense to you Sony-havers and you can give me some advice.

You're definitely overthinking it The memory recall modes (1, 2, 3) on the dial remembers what "mode" you were in and the state of camera settings when you create a memory recall. 1 can be M mode, 2 can be Aperture priority, along with all your other settings. I do this all the time, my 1 option is tripod mode, 2 is my airplane mode, 3 is portrait mode.

First, go to the mode you want on the dial (like aperture priority), then set up the camera the way you want as far as settings. Then go into Memory Recall in the menu and tell it to set to a position on the mode dial. The memory recall tabs allow you to scroll and see what settings get saved. 1 and 2 are mode dial options, and M1,M2,M3,M4 are memory card-based settings sets. Don't save to the M-prefixed ones.

There's also Button Recall, which can toggle custom button assignments when you press and hold another button. But that's a separate feature and isn't linked to the MR modes.

Thanks! I hadn’t approached it from that angle. I’ll try this as soon as I get home.

If I want to make subsequent changes to my [1] custom settings, would it be safest to just set my dial to [1], make the changes in the menu, then overwrite 1?

Yep! The whole point of memory recall is saving the state of the camera. You can save over it any time.

Getting a lot more traction on enjoyment of the a7iii after first being a little disappointed in the purchase.

Things I changed:

Swapped the kit for a 24-105 f/4. Kit is very serviceable but I wanted a bit more reach and a constant max aperture for my travelling this year. I’ll unload the kit on eBay for a few bucks and maybe out that toward a nice 1.8 street prime.

Cranked the EVF brightness way up. My biggest complaint about the camera (Ok ok other than the menus) is far was that I felt the EVF was dark and muddy. After bringing brightness up two clicks it feels like a new EVF. I mean it’s still no pro EVF but I am actually pleased with what I have.

Still trying to get comfortable with autofocus modes. On my Fujis I just relied on the one AF point I moved around the screen. Now that I have way more options I’m trying to use more of them, but I keep reverting back to just setting the AF point and not letting the camera decide otherwise. In certain modes (extended flex maybe?) and lighting combinations I find that I can move my af point ant the camera will still decide to focus on a point outside of my intended target. I’m sure this will just come with practice, but that’s practice I hope to get in now before I’m overseas shooting memories.

They are Chinese knockoffs made by a company called Ouyama, and variously labelled as Canon, Canomatic, Nikai, Tashica, etc.

The specs for the X100V seem to have leaked, the only real banner feature for me is the tilt screen, the lens is no faster, no stabilization and it doesn't look like it's weather sealed which is pretty much the only thing I really wanted. Not sure why they think this thing will warrant $1500 because it now has a touch screen, 15% better battery life and a slightly better sensor. There's still stuff to learn next week, they could improve the manual focus by wire and they supposedly did a ground up redesign of the lens so maybe it'll be sharper at F2. Thinking my next camera will be a used X-Pro 2, then I can get weather sealing and a screen and not pay a mint [or just start saving for a Q3, it should be out by the time I could afford one :v:].

I'm getting the feeling Fuji is getting too clever with the product segmentation and value engineering all their cameras.

A flip screen was definitely in the top of some people's wish list.

I bet weather sealing it would be pretty challenging. The lens moves in and out, unlike the Q, unless that is something they've changed with the new model.

A real improvement would be better AF, and maybe the old lens design was the weak link in the previous cameras.

The leaked specs for the E-M1 III make my eyes glaze over. Maybe it’s time to leave m43 behind for good. the A7RIV is way too expensive, so maybe Fuji is the answer? I’ll definitely look at the XT4. One huge selling point of the m43 system is still the amazing Olympus 12-100, does Fuji have anything that even remotely compares to that lens?

Atlatl

Art thou doubting
your best bro?
Fuji has a 18-135mm 3.5-5.6, it's weather sealed and stabilized and pretty decent. It being one stop slower at the long end won't matter at all since you can shoot at big idiot ISO on Fuji and it still looks good, especially if you're just doing social media or normal people size prints.
