Not just then, but even now I think it is better than anything else.

In my mind, the device software was gotten to a good working state at a very early version and since that point, a team of about 12 nerds just spent all their time working out ways to tweak it to perfection, adding in little bits to make the experience more intuitive/faster for power users with every release. They each wanted to get internal bragging rights for shaving a single keypress off any workflow.

Of course, phones now need to do a lot more than just email, which is why they lost.
But compare their keyboards where you could reliably enter an obscure extended character in <3 presses without looking at the device with my latest&greatest Samsung where the @ symbol on the keyboard changes location depending on what app you're using, loving up any kind of muscle memory.

Ah. I never had to use BES myself, but I heard a lot of admins give the impression that it was the spawn of the devil.

I did use the desktop version, which had some amazing sync capabilities (customisable mapping of the contact card fields for example).
The only isse was that anytime you wanted to sync your phone, you had to toss a coin to see if it would work.
(Heads: it fails. Tails: it fails. Edge: it syncs)

I did a format+reinstall last night to switch from 7 to 10. Even on a completely fresh install I was able to just punch in the Windows 7 key I bought in 2009 and it activated fine. It seems like any vaguely valid key is good enough for them.

Does like this exist anymore? I don't remember how I got it in the first place, but I'm pretty sure it was because I was a student in some sort of computer related major I think. I wouldn't mind collecting some more windows keys.

I think the specific program I got it through was MSDN Academic Alliance (MSDN-AA). I got Visual Studio, Windows XP, Windows 7, and a bunch of other expensive Microsoft dev tools for free. It looks like the program still exists, rebranded as Microsoft Azure Dev Tools for Teaching (which is the most Microsoft name possible), though Microsoft's requirements for proof you're a student seem a bit stricter now than I remember them being back then. However, it looks like the Technet software downloads for non-students are gone (and a non-student TechNet subscription was mega expensive; IIRC it was always something you'd get as a benefit of being a corporate IT drone instead of something you'd buy for yourself) but oh well; I got what I needed v:v:v (and to be fair these days the free version of Visual Studio is just fine for hobby developers and grey-market Windows keys are dirt cheap).

EDIT: I'm going to embed that Microsoft naming/branding video just so it doesn't get lost in my links since it's both relevant to the thread and still very funny:

I should really update my Windows 7 install to 10, but I only use it to play games so haven't bothered yet. I did throw a blank HDD in it and installed Windows 10 back in 2016 or whenever the free upgrade was being promoted, so I don't expect to have to enter a key at all - the hardware hash should automatically register the install. I also desperately need to build a new computer, so doing too much work on this one is hard to muster motivation for.

Since we're on the topic: what's the relationship between a microsoft account and being able to install/upgrade 10?

I ask cause I have a win7 laptop that I did the free upgrade to 10 when the offer was on. I just did a flatten/install of 10, using MCT.

If I want to sell it on ebay, can I do the MCT install again, not use my MS account and the new owner can still get activated on 10 using a new a/c?

SubNat

I'm pretty sure microsoft accounts don't have anything to do with windows licenses and upgrade/installs.

They're just an additional thing to agglomorate all tracking data on you help manage your data and sync stuff between pcs.
(And are in no way required, but windows hides the non-microsoft-account user setup more every time I install windows, it seems like.)

You can just run a full factory reset on it (and wipe the drive(s).) and it'll be fine / keep the license you had on it, no sweat.
The system is meant to support multiple users with separate accounts on the same pc too, so it would be strange if it bound licenses to it.

Just in case somebody wanted to know... A win OEM 7/8/8.1 key will activate a new clean install but will only accept the key as a manual post-install key insertion ("change my key"), same with windows 7/8/8.1 retail(if you plan to use automation with powershell after a zerotouch install to activate those keys, you cannot)... Only a OEM windows 10 key will install and activate with no user interaction required(like a zerotouch reinstall).

You should be able to remove the device from your account here. The license should then stay with the hardware.

Nope, if you associate your Microsoft account with your windows activation it means next time you install windows you don’t need to bother activating, you can just log in to your Microsoft account and then activation will happen. I’ve done it a bunch of times on reinstalls and hardware changes.

I just did 3 of them, clean installs, put Win7 Pro OEM key from the case sticker in during installation, and it showed as activated after it was done. One of them was a 32bit install replaced with a 64 bit one (might get more ram for that computer soon - it's only got 2GB.

Maybe it's a localized version issue, our hp OEM codes will never activate if we do the key entry on install(win 7) or if we attempt to have it read from bios(win8.x). 🤷‍♂️
