I wish they were all Flexlm. I have no problem running that on a proper server system. Our servers have no problem running Flexlm. Our monitoring system can monitor Flexlm. This garbage is not Flexlm. Both vendors decided to run with something custom and Windows specific. Our hypervisors have USB hubs attached because we ran out of space for dongles. They are passed through to the VMs but lack proper identifiers so after a reboot the VMs can't start because those dongles race against each other for addresses. And we still have vendors being pissy because they aren't running on bare metal.  Licensing has to be the most soul sucking aspect of my job. We had one vendor who insisted we install a specific Sentinel license server version KNOWN FOR AN UNAUTHENTICATED REMOTE EXECUTION VULNERABILITY.

Just got back from a weekly team meeting... In my group, (for simplicitys sake) there are 2 devs, a manager and an upper manger. We have been working on a data collection/ display project for a production department for the past few months. The other dev was supposed to create a simple forms app for data entry. What does he do? Take a screen shot of what one of the managers created in Flow or some like that and shows it off. He had two weeks to do this.

We have solved that problem by using moxa nport usb to ethernet converters, the vm gets its own matched usb dongle and can happily flop around hosts all day with no repercussions.

I did some upgrades for them 2 days ago overnight, told them I would be in our office the next day (which is rare and this client is DIRECTLY next door to the office) and to immediately let me know of any issues so I can run over (or even remotely access) and fix them. And come to today, I'm at another client, get an angry email from first client saying stuff has been broken since yesterday and blah blah blah throwing me under the bus to my boss, also blatantly lying about a couple things in the email. They didn't tell anyone thing was broken, I called them, had one of them walk me through the problem, and had it fixed in 45 minutes (25 of which was spent on the phone with the vendor). Like I understand our clients sometimes don't want to get billed for something, but you fuckers aren't getting billed for this, I told you this, and you still are idiots and tried to gently caress me. Pissing me off: I've discovered the beauty of setting ones self to "Do Not Disturb" in Skype for Business, and having a list of people who are explicitly allowed to IM you; however, my coworkers and I haven't been able to find a way to change the default status in Skype to DnD, or to extend the length of a status change to DnD to beyond 24 hours.

Somehow I haven't talked about my coworker who has talked about his incredibly diseased and unhealthy bowels every day of the past couple months. Today I escaped a conversation about the imminent explosion of his stomach by literally mouthing the words "Help Me" to a girlfriend in HR whose gmail suddenly needed attention He also tried and failed to throw a much more capable colleague under the bus for a very stupid reason nobody cared about - in front of everyone - and you could just about see alllllllll see his goodwill burning away.

We have an office of nineteen colleagues of whom one is female. I am pushing an effort forward to improve our culture and make it more diverse and more inclusive. I’ve been working on mindfulness of privilege and micro aggressions with my team and have been having a hard time reaching one of my teammates who, during instruction sessions in a room of roughly a third women, calls the group “guys”. “You guys need to know this.” “That was fun you guys.” Etc. He just doesn’t see a problem with calling women guys. And yet he wonders how come there aren’t more women in tech.

There are a million and one things that you can be doing that would be time better spent trying to change "guys". It's nice, sure, but ultimately who gives a poo poo if I'm being paid whatever percentage of the male dollar and need to be a relentless self advocate to get anywhere. The best thing you can do for your female reports is to be a mentor , to spend political capital on them and to support them and their careers. Assuming American English, the gender of a group is determined by the majority gender of its population. If the percentage was reversed, and it was 70% female saying "Ladies" would be fine. In this modern era of PC culture, I have created a new acronym for referring to people as to not offend anyone. If I don't remember it don't know the correct pronoun I use C.O.D.O.M. (Co-dumb) This stands for collection of decaying organic matter. No one can deny that they are not a collection of decaying organic matter. On Friday I was helping 'troubleshoot' some Samba stuff. Each directory was owned by a unix group of the same name, which contained no members code:Crickets. And as you can tell, someone did 'chmod -R 777' WHY I said you never ever ever do that. Every looks at me like I'm crazy. I theorized that it was done for one of two reasons, and blindly followed ever since: 1. Someone couldn't actually get permissions working and just beefed it 2. There was a fileshare that was needed by some other program/service and you couldn't get it working right Anyway....boss said it wasn't an issue to worry about. I then logged in as the design department sftp account, browsed every share without restrictions and then deleted a file. So any of the guys over in the CAD department could browse every file on the server, or delete everything (accidentally, or not) Dumbfucks.

I don't really care...I just have one very boring week of work left. It's just amazing how dense they are. I had to fix another thing on our HR website with vacation scheduling....employees couldn't enter a partial request because the columns for the in/out times had the data type changed, without telling anyone of course, and trying to blame the developer who was out for the day.

Yeah, that's fairly common-sense for positions with access to systems that the company relies on. It's usually a policy in place as an overabundance of caution. They have no way of knowing the state of mind of people giving notice, whether they are leaving for a greener pastures with no real animosity or a seething cauldron of rage. So they hedge their bets. Where I've worked it's either been "spend your notice period doing knowledge transfer but we're yanking your access to sensitive systems" or "just go home and we'll just pay you for the notice period" E: I should note my work for the last 20 years has almost exclusively been in the security arena and/or having direct access to customer security infrastructure. A colleague of mine gave notice that he was going to work for a competitor. After the meeting he wasn’t allowed to touch his laptop and was escorted directly out of the building with badge revoked. IT said if he had any personal data on it (pictures, mainly) they’d get in touch after burning it to a DVD. We don’t screw around, apparently.
