I wonder if the BoD are going to get sad now that they're about to get ignored as irrelevant. Joris has his majority, so they can go back in the box next to the DUP and other intermittently useful idiots. Fucks me off how much that stuck around. Even if I'm not convinced that many people believed it, it cost a lot of energy to deal with and constantly came up and derailed meaningful discussion. Corbyn's weakness was that he wasn't aggressive enough where it mattered. I've actually been thinking that once we've got a new leader, it'll be interesting how they choose to interact with the media. It's really tempting to just snub them. Don't outright block them from attending labour events, but save all the questions for local reporters. Leave them hanging around desparate for a comment. We have a tory majority so just enforce absolute party discipline. Nobody gives interviews to the BBC without central approval or they get the boot. Stone wall the bastards.

After 4 years of hearing nothing but Brexit, 12 days until the country ceases to be a member of the EU and there is not one mention of it on BBC News website on the main page or the UK page. You have to go to the politics bit (which usually just has Westminster minutiae and gossip for people who fancy themselves political anorak nerdlingers) to see anything about it. More important stories (aside from obviously very important Harry and Megan news) include a story about an Elephant Man statue. I honestly would not have believed how unfathomably silly this country is without witnessing the events of the last couple of years :/

Before it the UK could decide to (unilaterally) revoke Article 50; afterwards, almost nothing can be done. The transition period can be extended, but only once and only for a maximum of two years, which is way too short to negotiate anything meaningful with anyone. The UK is rapidly approaching the cliff edge and literally nobody in the media gives a poo poo. (Labour and Corbynism, on the other hand... and how about that Meghan) After the end of January the UK will have fallen off the edge and will be in free fall, but my prediction is that as long as it hasn't yet hit the ground, people will continue not to notice.

I saw him speak at the Peterloo 200 event. A few people from Salford Labour walked out when he got up to speak, but Manchester JVL stayed and cheered. The overall view from the latter seemed to be "man's a prick sometimes, but you can't always pick and choose your allies." I think that's something that the liberal press likes to selectively ignore. Sure, you can boot people out for being actual racists or antisemites or creating a toxic environment, but if you're in a marginalized position, or advocating for people in marginalized positions, to do that honestly you're going to have to involve people who are a bit of a prick sometimes, or have a chronic foot in mouth issue; being able to select for absolute purity is a mark of privilege. Of course the liberal press forget that immediately once they're done purity policing the left and go out for golf and martinis with reasonable moderate tory columist Arthur von Judenhass.

I honestly would not have believed how unfathomably silly this country is without witnessing the events of the last couple of years :/ I'm struggling to find the news story, but I'm sure that just after the election it was reported that government departments were to be told to stop sending out press releases about brexit. The government justification was something like "no one wants to read about trade deals." It was clearly just a tactic so that brexit would drop out of the news cycle and it would appear to be "done." Journalists pointed this out at the time, yet still seem to be going along with it. The new statesman podcast, maddeninglyi had Stephen Bush (who's usually pretty good) be thankful for the labour leadership contest because otherwise he'd "have nothing to talk about." I know the press are poo poo, but this is such blatant lazy journalism - if its not in a press release to be recycled it's not even on their radar - that it's loving infuriating, especially when it's not like this wasn't obvious right from the start

See that looks much better. I could get behind gothic architecture a little bit if they kept it painted like a Mexican liquor store and not let it go the colour of an uncleaned toilet bowl in a hard water area. Unfortunately every time someone suggests painting a Church in the kind of deliberately gaudy fashion that the old Catholics loved all the supposed art and architecture lovers object on 'aesthetic' reasons. Y'all inside dressed like Latin wizards and telling parables about a dude who could raise the dead but heaven forbid that the building look interesting.

I honestly would not have believed how unfathomably silly this country is without witnessing the events of the last couple of years :/ My theory is that the press will act in lock-step with the Tory party and simply stop mentioning Brexit after the end of the month, to solidify the perception that Brexit is Now Done. Obviously it isn’t done but as we approach the end of the year the papers will fastidiously ignore the issue even as the trade talks get more fraught. I think there’s a decent chance that they will go for a basic customs union agreement at the last minute as that’s the only kind of deal they could possibly get in the time frame, and the press will go to great lengths to downplay it. Brexit is not a political project; it is a psychological one. It’s about telling all those woke liberals, metropolitan elites, young people and non-white people to gently caress off and it’s our country not theirs and it doesn’t matter how much you whine about facts and morals we’re doing this thing whether you like it or not. And the Tories and their vassals the press would like the constituency who believe that to think it has been completely achieved on Jan 31. After that they will do everything they can to pretend that Brexit is over. Comrade Fakename fucked around with this message at 14:20 on Jan 19, 2020 |
