I sent this to my mum, I did that when I was a teenager, pretty much like that. I'm not sure whether she's going to laugh, or bollock me through the phone. Worth it

Is there a third-party posting tool that will insert the tweet number and hashtag at the end of each post? That feels so incongruous with the breathless tone, like someone going full bonkers mayday on a CB radio and then signing off with a calm and collected “over”.

If you are not from North America certain movies don’t have any cultural impact. The Princess Bride, A Christmas Story, The Sandlot. Without the internet I wouldn’t even know about these movies. Hell, I grew up in the US the time period those were all heavy hitters, but really only ever came across A Christmas Story because it flooded the TV channels around the holidays. A Princess Bride and The Sandlot were things I maybe only ever heard tangentially about (and via memes) until just a few years ago. This isn't, like, some sort of weird reverse-humblebrag or anything, it's just possible to completely miss something that's big culturally through random chance . Still haven't seen The Sandlot but have seen The Princess Bride and I'd love to be in a situation where I was watching it for the first time again

I mentioned The Sandlot because I’ve seen it referenced occasionally, but not to the extent of the other two. I guess it is an example of something that would/could be extremely NA.

Absolutely, given baseball doesn't really have a lot of cut-through as a sport outside the U.S. The only American children's sports movies that I know had some proper airplay and recognition down here in Australia were The Mighty Ducks and Space Jam. It might've been just sheer marketing force in both cases, but it probably helped that hockey and basketball actually are sports that exist as common extracurriculars here.

Without the internet I wouldn’t even know about these movies. I depended on whatever either my parents or their friends recorded off of TV. So I have strong emotions related to the A New Hope and Raiders of the Lost Ark however they were cut for TV and subtitled in Hebrew, and to Princess Bride similarly, the former because we had tapes of them, the latter because we'd borrow a tape with it from my Mom's friend once in a while. But a lot of times Americans will mention a movie they remember from their childhoods and I'll be very confused. Also, the concept of Christmas MoviesR is confusing to me, Home Alone was this movie that I watched as a kid, not part of an annual ritual like it is here.

Absurd Alhazred posted:Also, the concept of Christmas MoviesR is confusing to me, Home Alone was this movie that I watched as a kid, not part of an annual ritual like it is here. This actually goes back to licensing rights. The notion of specifically airing 'classic Christmas movies' on TV in the US came from the fact It's A Wonderful Life and its ilk were cheap as poo poo to air. Which created a culture that they could then make more movies out of. Even in other countries that celebrate Christmas, Christmas movies aren't really a 'thing'. A few of them hold in because they're just solid family movies that you can throw on at that time of year which is when you really need it (I know Home Alone and Elf are the big ones here, with The Santa Clause on the inside track because Tim Allen's humor is exactly mainstream Australia's), but there isn't really a Christmas Movie Culture.

Dutch movies about Christmas are rare if almost non-existent, although you can expect at least three new Sinterklaas movies each year. Unfortunately you can’t escape the deluge of Christmas movies on TV. And a lot of it is those generic Christmas dramas with unknown actors these days (I believe you’d call those “Hallmark Channel movies”). It goes beyond stuff like Home Alone, The Santa Clause, Elf, Love Actually, etc.
