Seems like Jess Phillips is basically setting up for the fact that the media are lapping up Lisa Nandy instead of her I am really puzzled by Jess Phillips motivations here - she basically seems to be going out of her way to antagonise the Labour membership, which would make sense if he wants to continue her media grift. But it seems like she actually wants power at some point? In which case it really does seem like she bought into her own hype and is now facing the consequences

Just been sent a job spec for ‘Director of UK Exit’ for HMRC. Firstly - vaguely concerning they’ve only started recruiting this position today, and secondly: not a mention of the B-word anywhere in the job description. Clearly going hard on this BREXIT IS DONE ON 31 JAN message.

It sounds like Jessflaps is going for the Nigel Farage style "I'm not part of the political class, I'm just a normal working lass like you" sell except that doesn't play as well to middle-class centrist melts

And yeah, the actual election is the important thing, it's just amusing to see her flub it - even though she's clearly doing this to boost her profile rather than having any actual expectations of winning. I don't know if that's true, honestly. Flips was doing pretty well boosting her profile without running for leader, and while it's plausible that the fawning profiles will evaporate now that there's no need to undermine Corbyn*, jumping into a leadership contest you don't think you can win is a gamble, profile-wise. Burnham and Cooper managed to come out of 2015 looking like contenders that got beat; Kendall was a joke. If Flips polls at current numbers all this contest is going to do is cement her as a fringe loon. I figure she genuinely thought she had a shot. Just wildly misread the tea leaves. *Though I'm not seeing the press forgoing the undermining of RLB or even Starmer. There's also always the slim prospect of a cabinet seat if one of the melts gets in. Or an authenticrat rent-a-gob when the press come calling (while also letting her know she's at their mercy for coverage). And if she (somehow) wins, then she'll openly attempt to reverse the last four years and bring the party back to Sensible Grownup CentrismTM...while also aiding and abetting the Tories. I dunno, if she'd said "the British empire" then I could see her having a complaint, but "colonialism" sounds like actual critical study and I don't know why you'd push that as a bad thing. If she'd said "we teach about colonialism but we also need to educate about our domestic political system" fine but that just sounded like a daily mail comment Why is everyone so hyped on Rayner anyway? I know she's been in the shadow cabinet a while and she's done some good speeches and the like, but people were talking about her like she's the natural choice and maybe even should be leader, and I don't know why especially? I know she was ready to deck Farage on national tv but other than that...?

Yeah combined with her "me too"ing a black MPs post about racism in the HoC the other day, plus her thing ages ago about "white working class boys" or whatever it was... it's not looking good. I think people are hype about her because she's a young, Northern woman who isn't from the usual MP pipeline of private school->connections->MP, and she can get fired up about stuff. Honestly I think it's a bit of the same thing that Starmer's got going on - she's a "personality", and she does have working class credentials, but I'm not convinced by what's seemingly under the surface.

WhatEvil posted:https://twitter.com/nehashah_/status/1219285616711602176?s=20 Like wonder in an honest question way. Because if you'd believe some of these people then history class in 2020 is nothing but this on repeat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qx7m96RdeXU And while I can think of worse things it really doesn't chime at all with my experience of history in school. The Empire was "oh it spanned all these countries in pink which is why there are Asian kids here isn't multiculturalism great?" in primary and "check out all these countries that willingly helped us in WW2" in secondary plus getting into an argument over Britain's concentration camps in Africa. There was nothing on how hosed up colonialism/imperialism in general was, or how it continues today. On the counter, there was also very little about working class history, the Midlands food riots, Peterloo, Chartism, Merthyr Rising, etc. weren't mentioned, only that things generally sucked rear end to be working class in the Victorian Era and everyone got cholera. On balance I probably learned more of the "the British came here and they cut off our heads" side of history during school from my Irish English teacher's selection of texts. It wasn't a waste overall though, because I did learn about source analysis, dissecting bias, forming an argument, and all that good stuff that should be applied in general life. (Which might be why I find it highly unlikely that white boys are doing worse at school because they're constantly told they're the source of the world's ills, rather than that they've never had to build up the kind of ad hoc support networks around the African-Caribbean Centre or the Gurdwara that other people have.)
