Created by Jack Kirby himself, as part of his deliriously weird (even for Kirby) 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY comic book.

Yeah, he had a number of decent-to-great stories, including the above 1984 mini which is probably my favorite DeFalco thing, as well as a pretty solid but obscure 1999 run by Karl Bollers and Mike Higgins. He also had a major role in Earth X, and as scattered and overwrought as that series (and especially its sequels) could get, all the X-51 stuff in it was imo pretty well-executed and poignant.

Also substantial runs by both Kirby and Ditko, although the latter stuff is not especially compelling.

Don't you tell me my business again.
If I'm not mistaken, I think Machine Man even had his own action figure back in the day...?

Google says no but I swear I remember the extendable machine arms. Granted, that could have been any number of toys but my memory of it was the purple costume and also wondering/learning who the gently caress Machine Man was. The toy I'm thinking about even had a robot mask.

What the hell toy am I thinking of? I'm talking 70's era toys. Either the arms extended or the dude could launch his robot fists or both and you had a robot looking mask that clipped on to his human face.

Maybe it was fever dream or I'm combining memories of several different robot toys. It wasn't a Transformer. Now I'm tortured.

There was a 6 million dollar man bad guy who looked pretty machine man like that had a popular action figure

You're thinking of Maskatron. No extending arms, but he could pop off his hands, feet, and head, and had switchable faces. He never actually appeared on the TV show -- he was created because Kenner needed a bad-guy doll to sell.

I really really dont get it at all! I'm looking at the art that the line work and colorist have done seperately and they're both fine! Its just when you put these two together with this particular project you get something horrible?!

Is it maybe that the pages in this thread are cherry-picked? I did a quick search for this series, and most of the artwork I've seen posted from it looks more competent than these pages, and the art is generally getting good reviews (with some minor complaints about copy/pasting).

It's an extraordinarily ugly book. Those panels are cherry-picking to a certain extent because odd-shaped heads and stupid expressions are easier to dunk on than incoherent and incompetent visual storytelling but I assure you it has those things too.

Rotten Red Rod

Fair enough. Like I said, the art I found was more competent, but it still wasn't great.

You can literally pick any random page and it's pretty much always going to drop your jaw, yeah. She has an incredible work ethic, she paints a rock steady 4 pages a week :stare:

The only really mild criticism I have is the first chapter many of the intro characters look pretty samey but that goes away once the main characters are introduced.

I read that comic for a while a few weeks ago, but gave up after the 100th or so page when they were still introducing characters, and all previous characters seemed to be abandoned. The story never drew me in, but the art was great.

I loved the first adventure of SSSS but I recently just unsubscribed because this current plotline just isn't drawing me in. Shame because it is, indeed, gorgeous.

You can honestly skip the intro chapters set in the present day, it's literally just the ancestors of the main characters experiencing the apocalypse and has no real baring on the story.

Flesh Forge

Yeah you can just appreciate at the art in the intro and ignore the barrage of characters, the only time those characters are ever referred to again is in a family tree.
