Lol @ disease paranoia, I've already been officially told to impose a one week quarantine on all my staff who have gone to China for the new year ("affected areas", huge picture of coastal China) once they get back.

Couldn't we maybe wait a few more days for slightly more data? Heck, I have a "cold" right now thanks to kids in school, maybe I have it myself and have already played Typhoid Mary.

I mean sure we probably won't all die because of this new virus, but I do find very funny the classic progression of reaction to diseases:

1) Disease emerges
2) People make a big deal out of disease
3) Because people made a big deal out of it, authorities take steps to limit spread and treat the sick
4) Because of efforts to stop the disease, the disease turns out not to be a global pandemic wiping out the human race
5) People laugh and say haha wow we sure do overreact to what turned out to not be a big deal

i can't speak to that person's alarmism, but afaik the issue was they were rapidly seeing human to human infections, affecting people who hadn't traveled to the wuhan market, so it was already spreading out of control and with the lunar new year coming up it was basically primed to explode

you can say this for almost any major event, y2k, hole in ozone, etc, etc. people always look back and say "look how crazy we all were, it was never as bad as they made it out to be" despite the fact it took tens of thousands of people working to avert disaster

just a completely normal editorial posted in the financial post, the fraser institute is so loving intellectually bankrupt

https://business.financialpost.com/...obox=1579089349

quote:

The question ultimately comes down to what share of resources are best kept by workers, entrepreneurs and businesses that create them, versus the share of resources the government should extract to spend on the priorities it deems important. Two common measures are used to calculate the size of government: spending as a share of the economy and per-person spending (adjusted for inflation). First, let’s review spending as a share of the economy. According to the IMF’s Fiscal Monitor, Canada’s spending (including all levels of government) as a share of the economy is a little more than 40 per cent (without accounting for regulations, which would increase the size of government further).

A mounting body of research suggests this level of government spending is well above the level linked with maximizing economic growth and social well-being. Indeed, the evidence indicates that the optimal size of government for economic growth — including federal, provincial and local — is between 26 per cent and 30 per cent of GDP; beyond this level economic growth rates begin to decline. When the share of spending exceeds 35 per cent of GDP, not only is economic growth impaired but improvement in social well-being indicators such as life expectancy and educational attainment are generally limited.

Tegan Hill and Jake Fuss are economists with the Fraser Institute.

Great news from the land of ice and snow

http://www.stjohns.ca/media-release/state-emergency-lifted-parking-ban-remain

quote:

Today, Mayor Danny Breen announced that the State of Emergency (SOE) is lifted as of 6 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25. A 24-hour parking ban outside the designated downtown remains in place.

“On behalf of Council, we thank the public for their cooperation and patience throughout this emergency. I continue to encourage residents to stay home if you can and to drive with extreme caution as we transition away from the State of Emergency,” said Mayor Danny Breen. “My biggest concern is for public safety. Although we have lifted all restrictions outside of the parking ban, many of our residential and collector streets have yet to be widened, and the sidewalks around school zones are still being worked on.”

City officials and members of City Council are in constant communication with community and government partners including the RNC, the provincial government and the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District as streets improve and decisions are made.

“Our members on patrol and traffic services are reminding motorists to drive to the conditions on the road with the low visibility and impediments due to the large volume of snow,” says RNC Constable James Cadigan. “Our community truly rallied together in the face of adversity, and as we reach the next stage of this process, we are asking for the continued support of the community.”

Motorists are asked to reduce speeds significantly, drive according to conditions, watch for pedestrians and plan ahead to allow for extra time to get to your destination.

Metrobus and GoBus will return to operations tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 25) with multiple detours in place; please check the Metrobus website for route information. Delays are anticipated; customers are encouraged to wait in safe areas near your regular stop and motion to drivers.

From now until February 7, rides will be free for all Metrobus and GoBus users; we encourage commuters to try the bus and to leave their cars at home during this challenging period.

“Thank you to all of our municipal partners, the provincial and federal government as well as the military for their support during this emergency,” Mayor Danny Breen.

The mad motherfucker banned street parking and made the buses free. Now we just gotta find a way to keep it like this year round.

Too many people are hyper-focused on public transit (and other services) being self-sustaining. It's a public good that benefits the community it doesn't need to be profitable!

Related, I've long wondered if government provided housing would be more politically palatable if it was for profit/breakeven instead of always being social housing for those people.
