With SARS there was pretty quickly a genetic link found to coronavirus in Civets, and later research found a similar link to coronavirus in horseshoe bats as maybe the origin for both the human and civet version. I found this from Berkley:  here's MERS, coronavirus went maybe from bat to Camel to human  and SARS with official mainland numbers

The UK wouldn't do it because "saving face" is very important to western politicians, and they can never acknowledge something bad happening that could potentially be stopped by setting reasonable countermeasures.

Local customs aside, getting involved with bats in any way is just Bad News as far as viruses are concerned. A bunch of factors come together to make them perfect vectors. Eat whatever, whenever, but avoid bats.
