Although, on a second reading, it sounds like it might be a security clearance position, and the real concern is where they talk about being a possible weak spot. If they ask and he just says "I'm frugal" or "I spend all my money on my nice house" then I suspect they'd just drop it.

Making a blanket statement of "this is wrong" assumes that he's working in some office somewhere, with minimal responsibility beyond that. As you pointed out, financial issues could very well be a point of leverage for insidious elements (blackmail) or personal weakness (employee theft) to exploit.

Just dropped $200 (with tax and shipping) on eBay for factory JDM HIDs for my car. The factory USDM headlamps are pretty crappy, even after polish + clear. Osram Nightbreakers for the low beams and Philips/Wagner HIR1s for the high beams helped a lot, but that basically put it on par with the yellowed lights on Negative Ions. The low beams are "okay" with the Nightbreakers, the high beams just light up the road immediately in front of the car instead of going for the distance. The bulbs it came with.. one low beam was a Hella H1, the other was a Sylvania H1 (p side). Both sides had Sylvania 9005s for the high beams (likely original). I know the passenger side housing has been replaced with a junkyard piece.

Some forums checking says I should probably disassemble them and paint a small portion of the reflector matte black to give them a flat cutoff (to prevent blinding oncoming traffic). They also have electronic leveling that I don't have wiring for, so I'll need to figure out how to adjust them. I also know I'll have to disable the factory DRLs, since they run the low beams at reduced power (I'll probably add a third party DRL module to run the turn signals as DRLs, much like what the Saturn did). They use a $30 bulb that I can find on Amazon easily enough (D2R), I'll just keep a spare or two in the glove box.

I didn't plan to throw anything at upgrades on this car aside from the stereo and upgraded headlight bulbs, since it's a $1600 beater. Testing the ABS on a winding road when I came up on some deer hanging out in the road changed my mind on that; I would have seen them 1-2 seconds sooner with decent lighting.

They're definitely stretching the "reflects on the company" thing a bit, there. My previous company had a morality policy by which they could fire you for, say, getting arrested for soliciting or public indecency or something, but I've never seen something this inane. I would definitely be issuing a heraty to them.

edit: I mean, seriously. "We know what you make, so you can afford a better car" is the most assumptive bullshit ever. they have no idea what kind of house he has, or other property. Maybe he's chosen to dump as much $$ as possible into retirement, or supporting his frail, widowed mother, or paying off ruinous student debt, or any number of things that are none of their goddamned business. If the dude holds a security clearance they can just launch an investigation and pull a credit report on the guy without him knowing, excessive debt is the #1 reason people are denied clearance.

Also, the government does in fact say your poo poo is too old and can’t be driven. California just said all the non tier IV final diesel trucks (DPF only, not DPF + SCR) will no longer be allowed to have a commercial registration. This effectively takes them off the road for a business.

For the record I vote D and none of this surprises or bothers me. Have there been any updates on reddit?

Also, California has been shaping emissions for years, and it's hardly equivalent to "lol your car is a piece of poo poo spend more money or else". From what I can find in some quick googling, they're doing the exact same thing they always do - as of [year], [particular configuration] will not be legal to sell new. It doesn't take extant trucks off the road. It does say that new trucks have to meet the requirement, and it says that you have to repair trucks to meet the requirement (so, basically, "no one is allowed to sell tier II engines in Cali anymore - if you blow yours up, you have to replace it with a tier IV").
I spend a lot of time in and around hospitals, and I'm sympathetic, to say the least. Healthcare is hilariously inefficient and poorly run, and it's actually surprising it doesn't cause issues more often than it does (which is still a lot). I hope she's ok

AFAIK there aren't any DOT or state vehicle regulations mandating levelers for HID so you shouldn't run afoul of any laws.

Also I wouldn't feel too bad about $200 for the pair - I paid over $500 (in 2004 dollars) for a set of OEM bi-xenon projector headlights for my MkI Focus.
