Although, on a second reading, it sounds like it might be a security clearance position, and the real concern is where they talk about being a possible weak spot. If they ask and he just says "I'm frugal" or "I spend all my money on my nice house" then I suspect they'd just drop it.

Still tactless as gently caress.
My thought was it could be a teller, casino dealer, IRS auditor, corporate security or IP, or similar. There are situations when that letter would be 100% acceptable. They aren't asking about the car so much as his reasons. There are also situations where it's bullshit. Without more info we can't pass judgement on either side.

Making a blanket statement of "this is wrong" assumes that he's working in some office somewhere, with minimal responsibility beyond that. As you pointed out, financial issues could very well be a point of leverage for insidious elements (blackmail) or personal weakness (employee theft) to exploit.

Well don't you know I'm caught in a trap?

Didn't Steve Baumer, the Microsoft Billionaire, famously drive a fuckin 90's Taurus or some other horrible poo poo heap for years after he got made the President of Microsoft?

Man, it'd be hilarious to be a Billionaire shopping around for lovely used cars.

"Hello! I'm the president of Microsoft, I'm looking for a car at your fine used automobile emporium here"

"Um, yes sir, we have a few nicely maintained newer BMWs, Mercedes, and Lexuss I'd be happy to show you"

"Nonono, show me your finest American made car, under $5,000, I can't be throwing money out the window!"

I had to talk to my Sailors about their shitheap cars a few times, but that's because they kept missing work because their cars were always broken, and in the military you're expected to be intrusive into your underling's welfare in a way that would be very inappropriate in the private sector. I, in turn, got talked to when my '99 Mustang sheeted several gallons of gas down a hill, and triggered a fairly expensive environmental cleanup, lol. (Not my fault, the fuel pump croaked while I was deployed, and the shop hosed up the filler neck seal when they dropped the tank)

I think it's pretty fair to say that any employer that cares so deeply about appearances can lease a car for their employee or gently caress off, lots of high-profile lawyers and poo poo do that kinda thing (also it provides an employment incentive that isn't taxed as income, and the company can write off)

If the dude holds a security clearance they can just launch an investigation and pull a credit report on the guy without him knowing, excessive debt is the #1 reason people are denied clearance.

Osram Nightbreakers for the low beams and Philips/Wagner HIR1s for the high beams helped a lot, but that basically put it on par with the yellowed lights on Negative Ions. The low beams are "okay" with the Nightbreakers, the high beams just light up the road immediately in front of the car instead of going for the distance. The bulbs it came with.. one low beam was a Hella H1, the other was a Sylvania H1 (p side). Both sides had Sylvania 9005s for the high beams (likely original). I know the passenger side housing has been replaced with a junkyard piece.

Some forums checking says I should probably disassemble them and paint a small portion of the reflector matte black to give them a flat cutoff (to prevent blinding oncoming traffic). They also have electronic leveling that I don't have wiring for, so I'll need to figure out how to adjust them. I also know I'll have to disable the factory DRLs, since they run the low beams at reduced power (I'll probably add a third party DRL module to run the turn signals as DRLs, much like what the Saturn did). They use a $30 bulb that I can find on Amazon easily enough (D2R), I'll just keep a spare or two in the glove box.

I didn't plan to throw anything at upgrades on this car aside from the stereo and upgraded headlight bulbs, since it's a $1600 beater. Testing the ABS on a winding road when I came up on some deer hanging out in the road changed my mind on that; I would have seen them 1-2 seconds sooner with decent lighting.

I'll buy those from you for mine when you inevitably kill the car the headgaskets fail.
Failing that: where'd you get them?

The finance guy is probably the recipients boss and concerned about how they manage their own finances. The type of person who gives the word “corporate” a negative connotation to a poo poo ton of other people. We don’t know the details, but I have a hard time being outraged at someone who makes and manages a lot of money being asked by their employer to spend some in a certain way. The email doesn’t say you have to buy a new rolls, maybe that 10 year old ES350 will suffice. If its two VPs sending a nastygram to some middle manager making $75k a year then yeah, its lovely, but poo poo flows down hill and these types of conversations don’t usually skip levels. If I gently caress up its my divisional manager who talks to me, not a VP from corporate.

I could also write paragraphs about how corporate culture really is the old boys club up at that level and how you won’t really make it if you don’t fit the part. But that just is what it is.

Also, the government does in fact say your poo poo is too old and can’t be driven. California just said all the non tier IV final diesel trucks (DPF only, not DPF + SCR) will no longer be allowed to have a commercial registration. This effectively takes them off the road for a business.

Wouldn't all those credit pulls eventually gently caress everything up, or is it an uncommon occurrence? If my drugs were cheaper, I would almost consider staying sans insurance, or at least paying for most things out of pocket if I do get insurance. I can get same day appointments, I can be prescribed more accurate doses, and everyone rushes to make sure that I'm taken care of because my money doesn't take weeks of processing to get to the doctor

Not sure if you have many options in your area but I will very happily fire a doctor who's dragging rear end. My case took so long because I was slow to tell the hospital to stabilize me then transfer my rear end somewhere that knew what they were doing. Month and a half wasted at a hospital where they were basically afraid to touch me. Hope things start looking up for you guys.

The continuing assumptions y'all are making to support a business telling an employee how they need to spend their money is hilarious.

Also, California has been shaping emissions for years, and it's hardly equivalent to "lol your car is a piece of poo poo spend more money or else". From what I can find in some quick googling, they're doing the exact same thing they always do - as of [year], [particular configuration] will not be legal to sell new. It doesn't take extant trucks off the road. It does say that new trucks have to meet the requirement, and it says that you have to repair trucks to meet the requirement (so, basically, "no one is allowed to sell tier II engines in Cali anymore - if you blow yours up, you have to replace it with a tier IV").

eBay, of course, but I forget what rabbit hole I fell in to find them. It was very much a drunk purchase, I'm already wishing I'd waited until after paying rent. But they've already shipped. :downsgun: This is the specific set I bought. There's also halogen versions with the clear corner.

I just found the switch + pigtail for the levelers (they're not auto leveling, but the level can be adjusted manually), but (a) I don't have the wiring for it, since they never sold them with HIDs in the US, and (b) it looks like I'd have to lose one of my other dash switches. If I had to choose, it'd probably be the heated windshield switch - I actually use the fogs and cruise.

Geoj posted:

Unless it's as simple as supplying them with 12vdc I'd just leave the levelers disconnected and aim the lowbeams correctly after installation.

AFAIK there aren't any DOT or state vehicle regulations mandating levelers for HID so you shouldn't run afoul of any laws.

Also I wouldn't feel too bad about $200 for the pair - I paid over $500 (in 2004 dollars) for a set of OEM bi-xenon projector headlights for my MkI Focus.

Yeah, I'll leave them disconnected. I just have to figure out how to actually aim them properly. I'm assuming the leveling screws won't be there, or will be hidden. They're not automatic levelers either; there's a knob inside the car to adjust them (just ran across it on ebay, with a pigtail, but no idea how they'd be hooked up).

And they're reflector housings. Same thing Lincoln and Acura did. Except unlike Lincoln, you can still get bulbs for these (the same D2R Acura used on the TL, looks like a D2C is compatible too)

And, being the government they have the manpower and legal backup to make it much worse for you than just losing your job. Trying to compare and contrast a private company doing this against the federal government doing this, shows there's probably a lack of info on just how intrusive the govt. is to its employees and contractors.
