Private Speech posted:What's Irish food like? We're a tiny island nation in the middle of one of the richest fishing grounds in the world, so we have all the seafood. There's nowhere in Ireland less than an hour's drive from the sea and we have a really good distribution network, so if you order seafood in even the shittiest gastro-pub you can still be sure that your plate was alive and swimming in the ocean less than 12 hours ago. Also, thanks to being the dampest part of Europe, we don't really have a dry season so grass grows about 11 months of the year here, meaning we have dairy herds that are pretty much entirely grass-fed. I've had folks from our Houston office over here who were genuinely impressed by the quality of our berders and brisket. And here in NI, thanks to our Ulster-Scots connection, we're also proficient in battering and deep-frying the gently caress out of anything too.

Raskolnikov38 posted:america shouldn’t really get credit for the foods the slaves created But that's what American food truly is. We brought over people to do work in varying types of slavery, they modified their dishes for our turned to 11 palates, and welp, that's American food. For this I include: hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, chop suey, fortune cookies, tacos, and soul food. Our entire culture is the literally whitewashed versions of things immigrants/slaves came up with. Left to their own devices, WASPs make hot dish.

All I can say is that every time I leave the US I am immediately stricken by the overall quality of food in other countries, the lack of sugar in everything, and more than anything the portions. I lived in Japan for a little while and after returning to the US my partner's dad took me out to dinner and I had to be like "Please dont think im being rude, this steak and potato is delicious, but this single meal is more food than I've eaten in a day over the last couple of months". It was extremely eye opening and I actually ended up losing a crapton of weight because after that the 'illusion' was broken and I just started eating childsize portions of everything and feeling full, because those are adult portions in the rest of the world.

Being seeing/hearing a lot of Brexiter Boomer (Venn diagram...circle...etc.) moaning about this story recently: https://www.independent.co.uk/environment/cars-co2-emissions-uk-average-eu-suvs-climate-change-a9281606.html In short, the EU is requiring all car manufacturers to have an average CO2 emissions of 95g/km across their entire range (on sale within the EU, obvs) by 2021. If this limit is exceeded, the manufacturer gets fined in proportion to how far over the limit the average is, and the offending cars have a tarriff put on them. This statute has already been put on the books, agreed to by the UK since we were an EU member then. It's also one of the regulations that Johnson has pledged will be maintained post-Brexit. But since the UK won't be an EU member by then, the 95g/km limit applies to cars sold just in the UK. Previously a car maker would be able to offset all the tiny, economical superminis they sell in western and southern Europe against the bigger executive saloons and SUVs they shift in the north to get under the limit, or at least only bust the limit by a small amount. But with the UK taken as its own entity, there's no way of getting anywhere near a 95g/km range average given the state of the car market, where everyone wants a crossover or SUV or some sort of hot hatch or semi-sports saloon. Plus the UK's 'native' (Indian-owned) car maker, Jaguar Land Rover, almost exclusively makes high-emission 4x4s and executive cars! So now there's the spectre of popular car models in the UK either being raised in price or withdrawn from sale, with buyers being pushed towards smaller, more economical, low-emission cars. Which, IMO, is no bad thing. But there's a huge amount of wailing from the very people who were saying "We need to stand on our own two feet, we can make our own laws TAKE BACK CONTROL!!!" and are now all "This is tyranny! Why are we still implementing these stupid rules? I didn't think Brexit would mean I'd have to buy one of those fruity hybrid cars. CAKE AND EAT IT!!!" Well, this is what it's like being a small nation next to a massive free trade area, suckers. Go buy a Ford Fiesta 1.0 Brexit Edition or a Suzuki Swift Gammon-Line and enjoy it!

The year is 2025. My Gammon-pulled rickshaw clacks as it rolls into the cobblestone marketplace of new Olde London Town. Tins of haggis clank in my rucksack as I climb the stairs of Big Ben, the nerve center of the free trade movement between the warring factions Sports Mutants and Super-Labour. Looking down into the courtyard, two gangs of soccer hooligans are dragging Tory skeletons behind modified luxury Jaguars belching rank exhuast, modified blood pudding converters stinking up the square like a feast for machines. Children camped out on the roof of Buckingham fruitlessly whip worthless pence at the medical zeppelins in the sky, hanging bloated mid-air, with insulin and potable water. As the acid rain begins to fall, they pivot north to begin their grim journey to the freemen of the Emerald Empire.
