Most of my family is from Wuhan. From what I hear the public mood isn't "apocalyptic" (I have no idea whether people are dropping in the streets and don't want to speculate) but everyone with a fever is going to hospitals now as a safety measure so they are heavily over capacity and running out of detection kits for coronavirus. They expect that the epidemic is still in the early stages and will get more severe in the next few months before ameliorating with warmer weather.

Honestly, a decent decision was reached in fewer than five pages, which seems... OK? I mean, not perfect, but if anyone thinks a mod call was perfect then probably someone else thinks that something terrible happened. I guess maybe that could be the rumor and it really is Wuhan. But, I'd be suspicious. It seems to go with that other fake message that was going around telling people the air force was gonna spray down the city. I don't even know if you can disinfect a city for a virus like that. Wouldn't any disinfectant that would kill a virus also really gently caress up people if it was just blasted over everything in the air? I could be wrong there, though.

Rumors are to be expected. No quarantine on this scale has been attempted in modern history as far as I'm aware. This would dwarf anything attempted during the Spanish flu pandemic (as far as I'm aware, I don't recall reading that they shut down London or New York) Either the government has reason to be so alarmed, or they're wildly over reacting.

Read a book about history of Chinese (political) philosophy and the main thing that struck me is how little everything changed over time, despite regime changes that should have made a difference. China has been an empire characterised by severe central bureaucratic control over diverse populations, which succeeds by getting buy-in to the bureaucracy from the elites of those populations, for a long time. The only real time where this wasn't the case appears to be the revolutionary period, and it quickly went back to the same structures post-revolution.

That honestly only seems true if you take a very distant and abstracted view of things. A one-party state is simply not the same thing as an absolute monarchy, even if there's a strong central state overseeing a bureaucracy in both cases. And that's just talking about the government, not the very real changes in the country itself (in terms of things like urbanisation, industrialisation, infrastructure and what have you) in the past century.
