I want to be the guys in charge of setting up all the accident reenactments, because they look suspiciously like they just put a guy on a forklift and told him "gently caress up on purpose and try not to die."

here's the latest on the Houston explosion. bunch of pics to swipe through

from the article:

Records show Watson Grinding and Manufacturing ran afoul of federal regulators in 2013, when the Occupational Safety and Health Administration fined the company about $8,000 for violations related to the control of hazardous energy and wiring problems. It was inspected again in 2015 and no violations were found.

The company’s most recent chemical inventory filed with the federal government in 2015 only listed liquid oxygen onsite. However, the Environmental Protection Agency only requires the disclosure of certain chemicals stored in quantities above specific thresholds.

We had an equipment operator on a jobsite a few years ago that liked to show off his "canadian beltbuckle", ie: pulling his balls through his fly so any time he had to step out of the excavator he'd get a nice breeze.

They both had safety lines connecting their harnesses to supports above them. Apart from the platform failing I'm not really sure what the OSHA poo poo here is.

I wouldn't let that dissuade you. That video is a good demonstration of how implementing proper safety measures save lives. The platform that collapsed was a temporary one common to most rigs that's installed in the moon pool around the drill string below the drilling floor. It's purpose is to facilitate inspection and work on the area below the drilling floor. As the platform is temporary and not properly affixed (Welded in-place) you need a harness and working-at-height training to stand on it.

In the video the two guys on the platform both had harnesses attached which saved their lives. The guy standing above just right of centre was clearly supervising as he wasn't wearing a harness and was not standing on the platform. It's probably where you'd be standing if you were observing in some OSHA capacity.

Some of my coworkers have done stints doing oil rig safety. From what they've told me, the hours and work are incredibly difficult but the pay is ridiculous.

For me personally, oil rig safety and plant safety at a paper mill are probably the two that fall in to my "not just no but gently caress no" category. I'm fine sticking with commercial construction safety for now.

Yeah, I work in safety for power plant construction which I figured would be rough, but it’s nothing compared to the stuff I’ve been reading about oil rig stuff. I’ll pass unless I’m really hard up for work.

my favorite part of poo poo like this is when all the workers get run through the mill of claims denial and lovely payoff attempts from the ultra wealthy oil company. Had a bunch of plant worker patients in the hospital get effectively stalked by company lawyers trying to snoop their records and get info from medical staff to help them deny their injury claim. The workers would be like "i can't talk about what happened, if you see someone from the company do not let them into my room, and could you please not write x, y and z in the chart because they're trying to gently caress me over."

Every single one of those clips is from the drilling floor which unless you're a roughneck you're not going to be on (In fact you'll be shouted at if you do walk onto the drilling floor when you're not meant to be there). I feel like no one really cares but yes, accidents do happen off-shore but holy poo poo have things improved since Piper Alfa and I don't think I've ever been in a more safety conscious environment than when I've been off-shore (I wasn't even doing hard poo poo out there, just computer infra poo poo).
