Is it weird that I kind of want to go to an onsen village during Golden Week? I kind of like people watching. Plus can it really be worse than being in Sapporo during the intersection of the snow festival and the Chinese new year?

You'll be okay anywhere if you're not traveling with young children/a huge group.

Tokyo in Golden Week is bliss, the weather is nice and the trains aren’t packed. Not sure the onsen towns would be packed either, it’s such a long break that most people do overseas or farther-away travel at the time.

If you’re visiting Kyoto and Tokyo, crowds are going to happen. Just try to stay calm, keep moving, and not get frustrated. It’s a fact of life in a lot of spots.

Tokyo during golden week is fine for touristy stuff that appeals to foreigners and getting around will be easier since the commute rush hour times won't really be a thing. However stuff like theme parks, hiking trails, camp sites, museums, malls, and any other thing that would appeal to locals to spend their time off will be packed. Also you won't be able to take advantage of doing stuff during the quiet regular working hours which kind of sucks.

Speaking of, has anyone here cycled Shimanami? Do they have one-way bike rentals, or would we end up camping one day and biking back the next?

Also, is the bus between Onomichi and Imabari decent?

they have one way rentals. you can't rent electric one way though. also trying to do the whole thing in one day is inadvisable unless you're A Hardcore Cyclist

Hmm, the question then is how to move luggage and stuff around if we’re spending the night on one of the islands. Maybe get a luggage service, or try backpacking for a night?

Pack what you need for the night and ship the rest onto the final destination. Your hotel can usually help with the shipping.

Good call, I didn’t know hotels offered that service. Do cheaper places like Dormy do it? (I’m also getting flashforwards to having to puzzle out how to ask for luggage shipping :ohdear:)

The hotel itself doesn't do it but they can contact the shipping companies that do and arrange it.

well poo poo

I’ll do that then :v: especially given that I don’t think there’s actually a way to do a loop from Onomichi to Matsuyama then directly to Fukuoka. I only see a ferry ride from Shikoku to Kyushu, and it’s a multi-hour drive :gonk:

I guess there goes my grand idea. Has anyone else tried to pull off a trip like this before, hitting up Hiroshima, Shikoku, and Kyushu in one shot?

I would trust a hotel desk a lot more than a 7eleven to be able to help a foreigner ship their luggage. If you can speak Japanese then either one should be fine but if you don't then the hotel should have more experience dealing with clueless foreigners lol

You can mail suitcases from any post office. They'll take anything up to 2 meters if you/they can wrap it well enough.
Post office was basically 2000 yen* for each item. Airport luggage delivery costs more because they also offer storage.

*Prices may vary based on size and distance. Domestic only.

NHK World has fun travel shows too. Sometimes you have to skip episodes if one of the insufferable douche presenters is on that episode but there aren't too many of those. Cycle Around Japan is a pro relaxing in bed watch.

I binge NHK World a lot. Begin Japanology is great and you can find a ton of them on YouTube, mostly with weird audio glitches from copyright protection I gather but still worth watching. Japanology Plus is great but it literally pains me to watch Matt Alt ham his way through his bits.

Looking at his recent videos they only have 24k views or so after being posted like a week ago. Unless he has sponsors or something, his youtube ad revenue is probably $5-$10 per day.

This reminds me. Someone in this thread might know this show. I saw it on a plane a few years ago. It was a segment during a Japanese half hour variety thing with several segments - one about a ramen place in Hokkaido, one about a wood worker, but the best one was called Backpacker and this kind of doughy Japanese guy went backpacking in other countries and they filmed it. He was absolutely not a fit backpacking type and the one I saw he went to Madagascar. The humor was in how he would struggle with the situations and odd customs. It was tucking hilarious. It was rebroadcast from Japanese TV and was all in Japanese.

I’ve tried to google it but I just can’t find the show. Anyone have any ideas on that?

Don't you also get ad revenue from all the old ones as well? I do wonder how much he's made overall. I know that youtube ad monitization is supposedly a lot worse than it used to be which is why everyone has ad/sponsors in their videos now. Suppose that's the downside as the atmospheric videos don't have much way to incorporate that.

Planning a trip for next month, looking at several days in Tokyo followed by several in Kyoto (probably 9 and 6, respectively). i'm looking at staying in Shinjuku in Tokyo, for the ability to get around to everywhere else. Is there a particularly good area to stay in or particularly an area we'd want to avoid in Kyoto? Three single dudes.

Just so you know, tourists can easily walk into any hospital in Japan and get affordable, fixed-rate prices for modern treatment.
(JP insurance holders have a 30% copay, patients without insurance pay 100%). For example, a same-day x-ray is $100 or less (out of pocket cost: $30).

If you can find something that will help rebook flights if you get quarantined, get that.
