Is that a passenger walkway that planes go under? That’s pretty neat. They better have a glass floor!

The Real Amethyst posted:Youtube live stream here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKXu06VaxLI It's not a new idea, they played with the idea of folding wingtips back in the 1990s when they were drawing up the original 777-200 for the same reasons - gate space. Supposedly it helped bring American Airlines onboard, but in the event they didn't actually implement it.

Yeah, folding wings as a concept aren't remotely new, but this is the first time they've been used on an airliner to my knowledge. IMO they should have gone whole-hog and made the wings fold at mid-span so you could fit the plane into a gate sized for an RJ. Imagine the convenience!

Just make the tips auto-fold when a sensor detects it has landed and is taxiing, no need to complicate pilot training with any additional lights or checklists or buttons.

For redundancy you'd better have two sensors though! Hook one up to the right and the other to the left. Then they can't interfere with each other

You guys are really over complicating this. Just attach the mechanism to a lidar based system that determines if an object is going to collide with them, map it in space and have it move them based on the required calculated angle to avoid it. It can then move back once it is cleared. This system will be running 24/7.
