Hmm, I wonder how the Indian government is preparing? Let’s see... https://twitter.com/PIB_India/status/1222385553892528128?s=20 quote:At the instance of Ministry of AYUSH, Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy(CCRH) discussed the ways and means of prevention of Coronavirus infection throughHomoeopathy in 64th meeting of its Scientific Advisory Board on 28th January 2020. The dose should be repeated after one month by following the same schedule incase Coronavirus infections prevail in the community. The Expert Group has furthersuggested that general hygienic measures for prevention of air-borne infectionssuggested by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India, for prevention ofthe disease should also be followed by the public. Dunno how legitimate this study is -- it looks like they only tested eight people. Preprint so it's not peer reviewed. https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.01.26.919985v1.full quote:We further compared the characteristics of the donors and their ACE2 expressing patterns. No association was detected between the ACE2-expressing cell number and the age or smoking status of donors. Of note, the 2 male donors have a higher ACE2-expressing cell ratio than all other 6 female donors (1.66% vs. 0.41% of all cells, P value=0.07, Mann Whitney Test). In addition, the distribution of ACE2 is also more widespread in male donors than females: at least 5 different types of cells in male lung express this receptor, while only 2~4 types of cells in female lung express the receptor. This result is highly consistent with the epidemic investigation showing that most of the confirmed 2019-nCov infected patients were men (30 vs. 11, by Jan 2, 2020).

Im sure you like talking about trains and exact figures of laid train tracks, but the perspective on cultural reactions to things is worthwhile. I had no idea about the fetishization of IVs for example.

Lote posted:There’s a confirmed case in Las Vegas now. Chinese gambler from Wuhan. the US is hosed. Whether or not the pushback against the report is true, it's still inevitable someone is gonna spread it at a casino. A casino where lots of people are smokers and are likely actively smoking. I have family that works in a casino, and another relative that's usually busy helping set up conventions this time of year. This is also usually the time of year where one of them catches something from work and ends up spreading it to the rest of us. lmao this owns Mostly I'm just worried about my birds; I don't think birds have been reportedly involved with this strain but I'm worried about another species jump anyway. And even if it doesn't, I don't know who's going to take care of them if everyone in my family is sick and incapacitated at once. Even the grocery stores on the edge of town don't have masks anymore, last I checked; they're the basic flimsy surgical masks, but I guess it's better than nothing. I even went out of my way to check different stores than I usually go to and not only did I not find a mask but I didn't even find the office supplies I really wanted. I voluntarily walked into a badly-organized, densely-packed Walmart and didn't even get a pencil sharpener <>

Well, the gene that makes you lactose tolerant started in Europe, and spread from there. As a result of that random starting point and the demographics/reproduction patterns since then, caucasians are less likely to be lactose intolerant. It's not inconceivable that some genetic mutation can make a population susceptible, and that population can be somewhat correlated with skin color. But it's not the 'race' that influences it.

Preprint so it's not peer reviewed. one of the things that happens in situations like this is you get a bunch of initial assertions being flung around with limited information. This is not a bad thing! They're coming up with studies and tests and trying to get information out there as quickly as possible for the rest of the scientific community to test. A study of 8 people is absolutely not large enough to make any sort of population based claims, but I don't think that's the purpose here. They're saying "here are some interesting observations from the data we have in front of us, go try it yourself and see what happens."

A Buttery Pastry posted:About 10% of Europeans are resistant to HIV (possibly an old mutation that conferred resistance to smallpox back in the day), most of them concentrated around the Baltic and the Moscow region. Not exactly a solid defense for someone trying to wipe out non-Europeans with super-AIDS though. I didn't mean to use 'race's but that's super interesting. I always figured that a subsection of a population was susceptible to disease due to their income levels and diets following from the restriction of their income plus genetic diseases that's passed down but that they would actually have some resistance or weakness to a external virus is just something I just learned today.
