Shoot down the E-11 earlier when the daily RPG attack makes the Patriot crew take cover and set it to automatic?

In Iraq? The place where a bunch of ballistic missiles slammed down? :thunk:

There is a solid argument that putting Patriot there would be a predictable reaction to the threat after the fact. And also an argument that it would expose a strategic asset to low end insurgent fire from mortars, rockets, etc.

But it is true that the general scope of ballistic missiles fired at US bases in Iraq were the types of threats Patriot has been designed and refined to defeat.

In the context of the E-11 crash. I was trying to figure out if there was some weird notion that it was shot down and could have been protected somehow. As a general policy, of course I agree with you. I liked having them at my bases when I was over there.

Is there something similar to Trophy APS for aircraft or would it not work because SAMs are huge? If so then what about MANPADS?

The current kinda-scifi-but-almost-reality idea is self defense lasers, but the short answer is you work to defeat the system guiding the missile: chaff, flares, jamming, etc. Or avoid; with MANPADS that's easier, since they're generally not going to reach out and touch someone at 30k feet. If there's a mountain they can stand on to reach that high, you avoid it.

Republican Presidents with a Republican Senate have a literal blank check to do whatever the gently caress they want. Surely nothing bad can come from that!

I'm happy the republicans are codifying that no law can bind the president immediately before we elect a socialist president. They're going to try to walk it back but I don't think that's going to work. We're in new territory here.

The rules will all still apply to any non-republican President. All the chudges they've appointed help them there too. I'd be willing to bet money that Democrats would go along with convicting a non-republican President for anything more than a speeding ticket too.

Yeah, this has been McConnell's long game. Pack the courts so only Republican politicians actions are legal.

I'm not sure what the future is, but I don't think we're a constitutional republic anymore. You can't shred the Constitution and then depend on judges, whose authority comes from that Constitution, to protect you. Maybe we end up with a right wing coup, maybe leftists pack the courts (and maybe both), but either way I'm thinking the judges gambit is irrelevant. This might be a world historical own goal by movement conservatives. They were winning the game and then they kicked over the table.

Since the first response of hundreds of thousands of people to this is to spend hours of their day making memes about it, and looking at them, it's another check under the "Humanity is doomed" header.

The right's messaging ability will likely overcome this even if we do get Bernie and he tells them to go gently caress themselves. You'll have millions of chuds on mobility scooters surrounding the white house for rallies as soon as the temps in DC are above 60.
