Yeah they were trying to cover it up and didn't acknowledge the virus' severity until a week ago. It's not China that says it originated in early December, it's people observing when China's coverup attempts began.

Subject: [All-Staff] Updated information for staff regarding novel coronavirus

Dear colleagues,

The University is continuing to closely monitor the coronavirus outbreak as the safety and wellbeing of the UWA community always remains paramount.

We have a coordinated, senior response team in place and we are actively engaging with students and staff impacted by this situation.

UWA has established a coronavirus FAQ website where you can find the latest official health and travel advice and support information for our students and staff. For all enquiries or concerns please contact ...

What health advice has changed?
Late yesterday afternoon Australia’s Chief Medical Officer announced the following changes to Australia’s current health advice:
• People who have been in contact with any confirmed novel coronavirus cases must be isolated in their home for 14 days following exposure;
• Returned travellers who have been in Hubei Province of China must be isolated in their home for 14 days after leaving Hubei Province, other than for seeking individual medical care.

The University is in active contact with our students in China who are directly impacted by this situation. We are working with teams across the University, at the highest level to ensure the safety of the UWA community and minimise disruption to our staff and students.

UWA is also working with residential colleges to ensure we have plans in place to support students living on campus.

What is the advice for people experiencing symptoms?
This advice remains the same:
• If you experience symptoms you are encouraged to remain at home or place of accommodation and immediately contact a healthcare provider by telephone (not online), and inform them of the travel history and your symptoms.
• Do not attend a medical centre, clinic or surgery in person without an appointment. This is to enable reasonable precautions to be put into place for your visit and reduce risk to other patients.

What travel advice has changed?
DFAT has increased the travel risk rating to China Level 3: Reconsider your need to travel. At Level 3, there are serious and potentially life-threatening risks. This can make the destination unsafe for tourism and unsuitable for most travellers. The advice is to check that your insurer will cover you. Please continue to the advice of Smartraveller.

On this basis all travel to China on University Business (including layovers), is suspended immediately and until further notice.

This situation will continue to be closely monitored and the University will continue to remain in regular communications with DFAT.

We will work UWA travellers currently in country to support their safety.

Where can I find out UWA specific information relating to coronavirus?
• Visit UWA’s coronavirus FAQ website to follow the latest official health and travel advice and support information for our students and staff.

• Please direct all enquiries please to ...

Where can I find out further advice relating to coronavirus?
• World Health Organisation
• Department of Health
• WA Department of Health
• Healix
• Smartraveller

I’m confused about the number of recovered being less than the number of dead. Is this due to a lack in follow up? I imagine so.

Someone who dies is definitely dead and won't change. Confirming death is quick.

Someone who's had most of their symptoms pass might or might not be recovered, and it's especially difficult to figure that out with a new mystery disease. Confirming recovery takes a long time.

A lot of what we know comes from questionable numbers from the Chinese government, but we can rule out the "one person will infect 150 others, 50% of them will require a ventilator, and 25% will die" doomsday scenarios by simple observation of non-Chinese cases.

(CNN) Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said Thursday he believed the coronavirus outbreak that has left millions under lockdown in China will help return jobs to the US and Mexico.

"I think it will help to accelerate the return of jobs to North America -- some to US, probably some to Mexico as well," Ross said a day after President Donald Trump signed the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, a major bipartisan trade deal and key priority for the Trump administration.

In an interview with Fox Business Network's Maria Bartiromo, Ross acknowledged the victims, saying, "I don't want to talk about a victory lap over a very unfortunate, very malignant disease" but said businesses need to take the risk into account and consider the virus when reviewing supply chains.

The lack of non-Chinese cases informs us a little bit about the transmission rate but that's all. International cases aren't even a week old and there's less than 100 confirmed cases internationally (with several hundreds more suspected).

If you don't want to use Chinese numbers at all then we basically know nothing beyond the earliest few days of infection, and that's for a virus that can take up to two weeks to incubate. The population size is too small and the infections are all too recent to say anything

No it doesn't, maybe you can read it and check. The first case I can find was 12th Dec. The earliest date mentioned in that report is 31st.

When your chart only has 19 days on it a 2 week difference in day zero is quite significant.

And that's just the WHO report. The earliest date that we can prove is Decmber 8th, 2019, with suggestions that those might also not be the original case. China hosed up their handling of Coronavirus badly and their insistence that they haven't is fueling all sorts of doomsday cultism here in the western world, because people think it's day 19 when it's more like day 60.

I appreciate that they're sticking to an "official timeline", but statements from the same government say the timeline is a lie, so..

I was at an all day work conference and there were a lot of people cracking jokes about coronavirus nervously. It was repeatedly noted that all of us probably want to avoid crowds like the exact one we were all in, and like we're all waiting with bated breath to see what happens next. Humor is a normal response in the face of uncertainty.

I doubt it's going to be the end of the world/civilization like the doom-worshippers and fear mongers want to believe, although obviously it's gonna kill a lot of people regardless and we'd certainly have had a better international response to it if China had not tried to deny this thing until it was too big to cover up.

Is it possible the major epidemic spread in Wuhan, China was all fomite transmission and CNC is actually really bad at airborne transmission? Apparently most hand washing in central China is done with just water, no soap. If all it takes is a little soap it could explain the low international (and Shanghai) secondary transmission rate.

A single doorknob or knife in the Wuhan seafood market could have been a super spreader in December of a previously not so contagious disease.
