I thought it was super interesting to see that a majority of Chinese coronavirus cases were male and could be attributed to smoking (compromised lungs) because males predominately smoke cigarettes way more than females in china and that Chinese male smokers account for like 52% of the world population of smokers.

Not sure i'd call it a causation as much as an interesting correlation but it was a curious tidbit.

What's wrong with what they said

Given that the 14 day is still an outlier and not the norm, he's unequivocally incorrect. Some official and not reddit napkin math guy statistician ran the numbers working with CDC and the WHO and the median time for symptoms was 4.8 days. Granted it's still possible for it to take longer (and is also asymptomatic), but to call it the norm is a bit extreme.

quote:

1) What is the incubation period? Why do I keep hearing 14 days? Is this scary?

The incubation period so far shows a period of 2-7 days with a 95% confidence interval, with median cases at 4.8 days. [1] The 14 day limit is the current maximum theorized incubation period from a Zhejiang case study. The exact maximum is difficult to know because this is based on patient survey and contact reconstruction and prone to error, but 14 days is the "safe" upper bound so far. This figure is similar to the ~5 day incubation for SARS. [2]

The research team believes that the novel coronavirus still has certain fecal-oral transmission, aside from droplet and contact transmissions.

WUHAN, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese experts warned that the novel coronavirus could be transmitted through the digestive system, according to the latest findings.

They found viral nucleic acids in patients' stool and rectal swabs after they noticed that the initial symptom of some patients infected with the coronavirus was diarrhea only, instead of a fever, which is more common.

The latest findings resulted from joint research by experts from the Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University and the Wuhan Institute of Virology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, China's top research body in natural sciences.

The research team believes that the novel coronavirus still has certain fecal-oral transmission, aside from droplet and contact transmissions.

So we can just prescribe people HIV drugs and let them self-quarantine at home...that's good!

But people in America have lovely or no health insurance and the HIV drugs will cause hundreds of dollars...that's bad

If this is an actual solution, the government needs to provide these drugs for free, or else people who can't afford them are going to go without and keep spreading it

It's probably not on many people's tourism radar for China. And the only other people on the planet who have heard of it are drummers, because the world's china cymbals and gongs all come from a factory in Wuhan (I've been there, bought too many gongs).

It is an inland city, with the Yangtze river cutting through it. It's freakin' huge. Getting from one side to the other can take 2 hours. But they finished their metro last year, and it's amazing. If you've ever been to Shanghai or Beijing, you know how awesome Chinese subways are. Never waiting more than 3 minutes for a train. Super clean. Air conditioned... it's the best.

It's probably best known within China as a university town. It holds the record in China, with 81 universities, and over 1 million students. So that's why I'm here. I teach in an art & design school.

Besides being massive, it's also about 20% wetlands. It has a bunch of large lakes, and really nicely maintained parks.

Take 4 minutes and watch this little tourism montage. Just a good reminder that it's a city full of people doing things and not a petri dish of disease.

Also, last year they fitted all of the buildings with LED lights that turn them into a single, giant 3D screen. It's bananas.
