We stayed there a few times in winter and due to the lack of insulation and 70-year-old-house drafts, my wife basically rugged herself up in a blanket and made a nest in front of it in order to stay warm.

it depends where you are, but a lot of suburban houses in sydney have pools. What I find most hosed is that not only is it hot as hell some days in sydney, some people actually loving enjoy it. anything over 27C and Im grouchy and uncomfortable and if Im in the direct sun its like a reverse-solar panel on my head and my brain just shuts down. the sun is insanely powerful here and it fuckin sucks.

Previous owners installed central air in the 90's or early 2000's, but for cooling purposes it just doesn't really do anything when the temp is 38C/100F or more - it just blows around hot air, and like people have mentioned it's about as good as turning on a few fans then opening doors and windows. The split system air con on one side of the house can bring the temp down in that room by 15 degrees C in about an hour but the layout means it doesn't reach the rest of the house. Then the first week I was here, I got sunburned so badly I couldn't walk. Now I wear sunscreen" I lived on a flower nursery with some backpackers form the Nederlands and they had to leave the country to reapply for their visa or something. Anyway, they spent 2 weeks over christmas in thailand and came back from their holiday less tanned than when they left australia. Im white as white can be (not ginger thankfully) and I will burn in aussie sun in like 5 minutes of exposure. I was in Berlin during their summer, was outside all day with no sunscreen on during a sunny day and didnt burn at all. Hawaii was similar, but I did need sunscreen there. unrelated to bushfires but there was also a french couple who lived/worked there too. They were permaculture hippies. They didnt wear sunglasses because according to them it stops your body producing melanin (because your brain cant see how bright the sun is) and thus does not protect you against skin cancer. they also peeled all their fruit and vegetables because they believed the pesticides used would give them cancer. they also smoked a pack of cigarettes a day between them.

Im in an old melbourne apartment. Has no AC or central heating, although it does have a fireplace we cant use. The house is amazingly insulated, during a heat wave you cant even tell how hot it is outside and you can feel the cool breeze upon entering on a hot day. Of course the lack of proper heating means the house gets chillier than outside as winter progresses and i kept thinking how much colder it would be outdoors of a day and finding it was slighter warmer out. I could probably fix this with a decent heater though.

Metaline posted:I’ve seen a few people mention shoddy insulation. What’s the reason for bad/non-existent insulation in houses there? Brain worms. The most common reason I've seen for why people don't insulate their houses is they think it makes a house 'too hot in summer'. Also on aircon chat, here in Canberra ducted evaporated cooling is super common. Which means you can't use it when it's smokey because it needs a draught through the house. And naturally fires happen at the coldest part of the year...

I used to use a small heater in winter, but it made my electricity bills far too high. I replaced that with just wearing multiple pairs of socks and my shoes at home in winter, and buying another two blankets. Occasionally I'll drape a towel across my lap if the cold is making my knees freeze. Summer I use two desk fans (One computer table, one at bed) and the occasional cold shower, and just alternate refilled water bottles otherwise (One in the fridge, one being drunk). Air conditioning would be great, but I like having enough money to eat more than I like being cool in summer. gently caress Australian energy prices. Seriously. Last night I went out and stood in the rain for about ten minutes. Was absolutely worth it. I have missed the sound and smell of rain so much.
