The CDC is recommending against testing anyone for 2019nCoV unless they know they’ve had a history of travel from Hubei Province in the past 14 dates AND a fever AND signs lower respiratory infection. So even if infected carriers are roaming around right now, hacking up their lungs at Walmart, when they finally ask a doctor to get tested, they might get completely dismissed for not having any known direct relationship with traveling to Mainland China. All the official reports estimate 2-14 days incubation period, and multiple sources have confirmed mild symptoms for the first two weeks, with severe symptoms developing around the third week. Given the timeline, we would probably expect to see a similar explosion of cases outside of China of severe pneumonia after late February, assuming people seek hospitalization. 2-14 days later on a disease that we've known has been hopping from person to person since... December? Whoever posted that this disease is possibly a trial run for the PRC to assert its power over its citizens and see what they can get away with during the crisis is starting to seem more and more likely to be the case the longer this goes on without a sudden spike in hospitalizations in other countries. There's a lot of one handed posting by people that are fear-mongering and getting off on it and every week the time to panic about it gets a reset instead of the slightest acknowledgement that maybe this isn't going to end civilization as we know it.

IMO this bring some kind of top-down exercise for the PRC to tighten its grip instead of a bunch of incompetent bureaucrats trying to coordinate with each other is giving them too much credit.

You can't test every person with flu-like symptoms during flu season when many people are just regular sick. So if a walmart in Topeka becomes the epicenter of an outbreak in the US, there will be a new set of testing guidelines for Topeka and Topeka-related cases. Sucks for Topeka, but at least there will be enough testing capacity to do all the sick people in Topeka because we haven't squandered it in advance.

It wasn’t about the fear of getting bombed by Iraq or something. It was the fear of our power hungry rear end in a top hat president getting us involved in yet another conflict in the Middle East. For example, one of my neighbors is in the military and is scheduled to get out this spring - he, his wife, and a lot of their friends were pretty worried for a few days that he would get redeployed.
