Being able to catch the ball is really nothing compared to being able to tell where the ball is going to be coming down and getting there immediately. Removing the gloves would lead to a whole lot of broken hands and fingers. The ball has some elasticity, IIRC it's basically string wrapped around a dense rubber core, wrapped in leather, but with the speeds it's going coming off a bat or being passed to teammates it might as well be a rock. Outfielders will throw the ball in drat near a straight line for 100 feet/30 meters, catching that can sting even with a glove.

Is this because of the size of the baseball? A cricket ball is harder, heavier and seems to come off the bat just as fast as baseball (if my brief look through google results is accurate) and nobody except the wicket keeper wears gloves. In fact there's a field position called short leg which can't be more than a handful of meters from the batsman and people have been known to take catches off full-blooded shots at this position (with a little help from lady luck of course) and there hasn't been an epidemic of broken fingers or hands as far as i know. The only difference I can think of is that the baseball being larger might make it more likely to affect the fingers if you try to catch it at full speed or something.

E: Granted that one hit his body first but either way, if someone can stand in that position without gloves, it should be possible to be in the outfield without needing them either

no one in cricket is dumb enough to catch a flying kooka burra to begin with(ok that's entirely true). Also Test Cricket(which is an entirely different beast than T20 Cricket) is less about smashing long range hits and more about strategic hitting to keep the runners alive.

I am 1 of 4 americans that enjoy watching Test Cricket. Its perfect 3am insomnia sports.

Yeah that's true. Fielders in baseball are making catches in the outfield much more regularly so there's a wear-and-tear aspect to it.

I mean, cursory research also indicates that hand and finger injuries are somewhat common in cricket. Most finger injuries in baseball seem to afflict batters getting hit by pitches too.

If you type in "ball speed off the bat in baseball" and do the same for cricket there's an assortment of random links and forum posts with some numbers. I don't have like, a study or anything unfortunately although that would be interesting.

Don't you hit the ball into the dirt playing cricket? My experience with Cricket is seeing a few gifs and walking by some exchange students playing it at college but I feel like generally the ball gets spiked into the dirt and then bounces, that has to take a decent amount of oomph off of the ball. Everyone's goal in baseball is to get it way the gently caress out there, so the "good" hits are in the air for 75-90 meters (mental math so I might be off).

I definitely bent a few fingers back uncomfortably hard trying to catch balls being lobbed to me without a glove, usually cleaning up after practice or something. A full speed throw from one baseman to another (very common) would definitely snap a finger if it got isolated.

I'm assuming we aren't talking about the catcher at all because catching 100 balls a night at those speeds would grind your bones into dust over time. They have extra-large extra-thick gloves compared to everyone else.

You are already dead
The DDT show I went to at KFC Hall, Cody was in the semi-main against the big third generation sumo guy to build towards them teaming up. It was not exactly a masterclass but it was probably the best Cody Hall match Ive seen because it was just two ridiculously huge men slamming into each other and looking dissatisfied.

After the show I went up to Cody and he was actually surprisingly friendly, almost astonishingly so, and I thought "maybe Cody Hall is on the path to being not total garbage some day." Mistakes were made. He is loving huge IRL btw, I'm almost 6'3" and he completely dwarfed me.

Dude made a joke about someone having "yellow fever" and followed it up by saying "Look, I'm dating a Japanese woman, it's okay"

That's on top of the super racist Corona Virus stuff, I've got friends in NYC who are getting mean as hell comments thrown at them because they're asian and wearing masks in public.

In my experience he's overfriendly at merch. Like if you don't approach him he'll yell stuff like "hey dude, aren't you going to come say hi?" or "it's me, Cody Hall" at you. Which is more than a little embarrassing when you're trying to navigate a congested Korakuen merch area and avoid Cody Hall.

Cricket is not okay, it's tedious and the best parts of it (sledging and cheating) are looked down upon. The days of pre-streaming services and cable were loving BRUTAL, when your stuck as a kid spending your summer holidays in regional VIC and everything was closed before 11am on a Saturday.
