Hope this isn't too off topic/not interesting to people who aren't me but I just saw something on an episode of antiques roadshow I thought was cool. So back in WW2 the US had these stamped metal splints they used when evacuating wounded troops. But they realized the springy metal was basically amplifying vibrations and making injuries worse. So the government contracted a company to make an alternative. What the designers came up with was a technique for molding plywood into weird shapes.   The designers, Charles and Ray Eames, would go on to use this technique to make furniture you might be familiar with.
