taking a short break from salo to say that this film is unrelentingly brutal and entirely unenjoyable to watch, yet so powerful that i can't help but recommend it. also, donald is catholic, but a convert from a non-religious family, which i think that colors his view of the faith and its traditions. but he's 100% sincere in his belief, imo gh0stpinballa posted:the pizzagate series they did was pretty informative, everyone says don is like the ur irony guy but he comes across as pretty sincere and chill on the pod. well read too. ime he is very sincere on the pod. hell, they answered my noob cooking questions and getfiscal talked about how his mental health problems interfere with doing poo poo like that. so, i like him Finicums Wake has issued a correction as of 07:15 on Feb 13, 2020 |

I posted with him on SA and loved him trolling GBS into multiple permabans, but he was chill outside of that then. I agree with that message, if only because it aligns with my own life experience with politics and everything else. Life isn't fair, things aren't easy but we have to try anyway.

also, dark souls is about how the bourgeois have fooled everyone including themselves into propping up a capitalist, imperial soul economy which is in its death throes and taking reality with it. the avatars of the system seem impossible to overcome, but you can do it, not through being the chosen one (despite what the PMCs tell you), but by never giving up and relying on others. once you get to the top of the pyramid, you can make the choice to continue propping up the only system you've ever known, or let it die, and go forward with the unknown collective soul of the dark. edit: basically, it's the story of obama's presidential campaign and his choice to disband his grassroots power once in office don't @ me edit 2: trump is the formless mass of aldrich obviously

drat. hell of a movie. had to take two breaks then a shower afterwards to collect my thoughts, but here they are based on the comments in this thread--about people being trolled into watching it or it being edgy teenager poo poo--i was afraid that it'd be like Hostel, just More Extreme and Edgy. Salo's not that at all. it uses extremity as means to an end, rather than as an end in itself or for shock value or whatever. yes, there's torture, but it's depicted in a way that makes it the opposite of 'torture porn.' the film's dripping with sexuality, but lacking eroticism and devoid of any notion of romance. salo's a metaphor for fascism, but it's so unsubtle that it seems wrong to even call it a metaphor. it's a depiction of what unaccountable, heirarchical power inevitably results in: decadence, depravity, and horrific violence. where the film really works is in its grueling portrayal of just those things. no one is going to find the torture thrilling or the sex titillating i agree with the guy who said it's not a film that's likely to radicalize people or increase class consciousness or whatever. there's no need to go out and watch it or tell your friends about it. hell, i think that, if any liberal does get trolled by virgil into watching it, they'll be unable to see any connection between neoliberalism and fascism whatsoever. especially if the neoliberalism comes wrapped in a nominally progressive veneer, like in the case of Mayor Pete. to the liberal, 'indirect violence' is a contradiction in terms, only the one who pulls the trigger is responsible for what follows. in that sense, the brutality of neoliberalism, and its corresponding aesthetic, isn't like fascism at all, so idk how well screencapping the movie and linking that to mayor pete works as a criticism. sure, if you're not a lib you'll see the connection and the critique. i guess that's why so many people are melting down over that tweet lol only after the movie did i realize why it hit me so hard. last year, due to reading these forums, i thought i should figure out what, exactly, fascism is. so i read roger griffin's 'Fascism,' a collection of translated primary sources from and about fascism. i found the texts horrifying, but only now did i realize the ways i intellectualized that poo poo, as a means of distancing myself from it. there's a difference between knowing that fascism is revolting, and feeling your stomach churn at fascism. the only other film i've seen that achieves the same effect, Night and Fog, is a documentary with footage from the death camps. that's why salo rises above being just a troll or edgy teenager poo poo: the content it depicts entails that it come in the form of a gutpunch, and salo delivers i stand by my impression from part-way through: it's an unpleasurable watch. but it's good, even if only in retrospect. if you post on these forums and hate fascism and/or like film, i think it'd be worth your while to watch no, i don't need a napkin with my onion rings and milkshake. see you at the next window, thanks edit: another reason the movie's so brutal is that it shows how fascism turns its victims against eachother, and the various ways that manifests. if it was nothing but scenes of violence and cruelty, that'd be one thing. but those scenes interleaved with the interpersonal drama was difficult to watch double edit: Impermanent posted::extremely gamer voice: oh its like dark souls lmfao Finicums Wake has issued a correction as of 09:41 on Feb 13, 2020 |
