Torpor posted:Ok, jesus china this bug isn't the goddamn plague. They are gonna kill more people reacting to the flu than the flu does all on its own. Anecdotally from some family members in Wuhan, regardless of the regulations there are currently not enough local officials to enforce them. There are still some people walking around without masks, there's a nearby suspected case reported days ago but no one has come to check in yet. The high-level orders may seem very forceful, but they percolate down through the bureaucracy and the community level people may not know what to do in each situation. On the plus side they have at least been on top of the food logistics, it's everything else that has felt lacking.

Some good news! Only 40% to 70% of the world will be infected by this thing if it becomes a global pandemic. https://twitter.com/livecrisisnews/status/1228402312055590915

quote:Some of the online conversation about coronavirus has bothered me a lot. A lot of people have maybe not even heard of Wuhan, and because the virus originated there, they have this conception that it’s a dirty, backwater place. But Wuhan is awesome. It’s one of the centers of the punk-rock scene in China—there’s this one venue, Vox Livehouse, that’s one of the coolest live-music venues that I’ve been to in the country, and right downstairs is this dive bar called Wuhan Prison that’s the kind of dive bar I think someone like Anthony Bourdain would have loved. And the food in Wuhan is awesome. It’s sort of a combination of Shanghai regional flavors and Sichuan flavors, and there’s some northern influence as well. One of their most beloved dishes is something called hot dry noodles, and it’s incredible. It’s a rich city with a rich culture. It’s an important city; it’s not nowhere.

https://twitter.com/bnodesk/status/1228455683084996609?s=21 2500 new cases in Hubei. Serious / critical cases continue to rise. If people are hiding from the quarantine and only waiting until they get pneumonia that would decrease the number of cases. You can suppress a fever with Tylenol or advil pretty easily

Someone said that China has 70,000 ICUs Hubei has 4.5% of the Chinese population, so that would be 3,150. How many could that have increased with state intervention in the last month? Because I don't think they have enough for this many people. Especially since the breakdown is 8,276 serious, 1,876 critical. https://twitter.com/BNODesk/status/1228457855189225472

They are spraying a mild bleach solution on dry surfaces that will kill viruses after an hour or so. It will not contribute to viral immunity cause of chemistry.

At some point if the quarantines aren't working they'll presumably just say gently caress it, it's going to get out anyway, and let people go back to work before they'd let their entire economy melt down. Obviously figuring out the true mortality rate of this thing would be an important part of that calculation, but after a certain point you're left with a pick your poison situation.
