This kind of thing always baffles me. Why do people care whether a movie makes money or fails? Why do they care whether one movie makes more or less than another film? Like seriously dude, you don't want to watch Birds of Prey. For whatever reasons, (women with agency? in MY movies???), it doesn't matter. If you don't like it don't watch it. On the same issue, you want to see the Sonic movie. Again for whatever reasons, (I have never matured past wanting to relive memories of media I consumed as a child), it doesn't matter. Go and see the film and enjoy it. What does it matter if the film you like does better or worse than the film you don't like? Unless of course, you do the completely normal thing of making a large part of your self worth be invested in media you consume, so stuff you like MUST do better than stuff you don't like otherwise you are quantitatively proven to be a bad person, You know, totally normal.

Shithouse Dave posted:I dunno about farm animals but dog eugenics hasnt really done any good for brachy breeds or hip dysplasia prone ones, among other problems The reason these dogs have these issues is because we've basically been breeding specifically for them, it seems like it's worked quite well? I mean, I don't really know what his point is because I don't think most people are arguing against eugenics' practicality so much as it's complete inhumanity and immorality.

BrigadierSensible posted:This kind of thing always baffles me. I mean, this guy's definitely taking it way too far. But I can understand, from a reason beyond blind 'my team'-isms, a perfectly good reason to actually care if X movie succeeds or fails. Like, I was really happy to see the latest Star Wars be poorly-received. Not just because I don't like Disney (even though I don't) but because a successful piece of media begets other media continuing down that particular road, and I really hate everything Star Wars is right now; blatant, empty nerd-pandering, a complete refusal to engage with anything resembling deeper meanings of a text, 'sci-fi' where the sci-fi setting is basically just window dressing, general lack of ambition about making something new and interesting. I basically just want Star Wars to stop now, because it's not providing anything new or interesting to me and it continuing is only leading to them making more stuff I don't like in that ilk. I admit, I'm a little bummed that Birds of Prey is kind of a bomb; I think we could use more of that sort of movie, and it's disappointing that the reasons it actually failed (released at a bad time of year, poor publicity showing, following on from a poorly-received movie in the first place, R rating cutting the audience without any way to make it up) will be ignored in favor of superficial reasons ('it's about women', Sonic somehow stole the audience). But I'm honestly kinda happy that Sonic's doing well, too, because that's also a movie I want to see more things like. It feels like a children's movie from the nineties released in the modern day, and I'm cool with nineties kids movies having a return.

We will gently caress it up. Even when the nazis literally murdered people with specific "deficiencies" those deficiencies did not go down in future generations. Science without a moral foundation doesn't work. Because it requires precision and honesty. A scientist has to be ready to on principle admit failure when he 99.99% got something right. Or he'll end up cutting corners and claim success and leave society to deal with the consequences down the line. A good example is Robert Kock and his Tuberculosis "cure" in 1890 which killed several people because credit for finding the cure was more important than the cure itself (which would only come 70 years later)

The issue is we bred dog and other animals to serve our needs rather than be good animals in general. So you need to decide what even is a good person. It also doesn't account for the fact Nazi Germany kill hundreds of thousands of people with schizophrenia but just over a generation later level were back to their preholocaust levels. So it's questionable that it even works that well on people very well. Aramoro has a new favorite as of 13:18 on Feb 16, 2020 |

The fact that very purposely controlled breeding of an animal over millennia can be evidence of how it will work on humans (and at that, when it has been implemented on humans, it was only for a few select years) is just some galaxy levels of hosed up logic. Selective breeding as a concept would probably work on humans but holy poo poo you would remove all aspects of morality and humanity to implement it that it is astounding at how much of a piece of poo poo you have to be to even consider it.
