Canopy finally released their first album today (after a demo in 2011, and a pair of EPs in 2014/2015), and I'm really digging it so far.

This wasn't a cut. It was a slab. And I loved it!

Thanks guys!

I used a combination of ezdrummer (electronic kit), a sample I recorded some years ago of a door slamming (that's the bass drum analogy) and a noise synth (harsh digital nose) for percussion sounds.

New album from Kirk Windstein - Dream In Motion

bandcamp.com posted:

Windstein is a living legend. The Southern metal lifer helped create the New Orleans sludge sound as a member of Crowbar and Down, and his debut solo record, Dream in Motion, arrives after more than three decades in the scene. The album leans into his contemplative side; there aren’t many poo poo-kicking sludge riffs to be found in its 44 minutes. Instead, we get nine thoughtfully rendered, richly atmospheric songs that feel like they’re coming straight from Windstein’s soul, rather than from his amp. The tenth and final song is a cover of Jethro Tull’s “Aqualung” that’s as unnecessary as it is entertaining. After the heart-wrenching journey of the rest of the album, it’s a treat to hear Windstein stretch his legs over something that’s simply fun.

Oh wow, I do not like this at all. Come on guys, this song is a thing of beauty live and this is just...bad. If they do this to The Dragonfly I'm going to need some grief counceling.

Completely unrelated to that, is anyone else going to the Om or Cult of Luna shows in Atlanta next week? I'll be there and reasonably conspicuous, plus if you find me I'll probably buy you a beer.

my oft promised Guide to Aussie Doom Scene is finally here. I saw an absolutely fuckin insane show last night which prompted me to get this done so I can gush about em.

Theres a lot of stuff here that borders on psychadelic stoner/doom so I'll might post those entries in the other thread.

Part 2 will be posted at some point in the very un-near future and will consist of the wave of now fanbase-less metalcore bands trying to diversify into Stoner/Doom/Sludge and bringing all their silly Djent strumming and angry Crab stances with them. Some of them are OK!

Part 1 - The best Australia has to offer

Jack Harlon and the Dead Crows
Melbourne
Langolier - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziswSZZbyL4
Ed Parsons (live) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0MjisGf0H0

Saw these guys last night and had my understanding of heavy turned right the gently caress upside down. Holy moly. described as 'frontier doom' there is definitely some mild country/blues inspirations here and there with some hints of All Them Witches. Similar sounds to Elders album Dead Roots Stirring, These guys are gonna make some waves. Only complaint is the band name is a bit folksy and I wouldnt have considered seeing them if someone hadnt mentioned they were quote 'kinda heavy'

Holy Serpent
Melbourne
Shroom Doom - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjE131Brhw0
Fools Gold (live) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ll5HpBPGfE

Probably my Favorite Aussie S/D/S. I've seen them a ton but they never fail to deliver some truly heavy tunes and expand your headspace. Described as 'post doom' or 'doom surf rock' they have a self titled EP and 2 full length albums. Their newest, Endless, is not their strongest entry but the track "Lord Deceptor" is a crushing wave of Syrupy riffage. If I had to compare them to someone id probably say riff and tone-wise theyre like Windhand but with way more variety and proggy undertones.

Comacozer
Sydney
Mydriasis (full album) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnbgzJjIXZc
Definitely one of Sydneys best heavy acts. This is their latest album and definitely their most consistent. Think My Sleeping Karma, Yawning Man, Naxatras but with 300% more Fuzz and DMT injected straight into your brain.

Potion
Sydney
Women of the Wand (EP) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foITtK6ZTC0
Rather new on the scene and I have only seen them with their full lineup once, but absolutely huge sound for a three piece. Vocals are similar to Cough, Musically similar to Monolord but less sludgy. They opened for Beast Wars last week and absolutely gave them a run for their money.

DAWN
Sydney
Dawn (EP) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLNq6HLxvv8
all girl four piece. Lots of fuzzy tones and super heavy on the pagan/occult themes. They have new stuff coming out soon which is a huge step forward over their self titled EP and explores even Darker sounds. Vocals are their most interesting aspect, with most lyrics sung by 3 of the gals in harmony. Live show usually consists of some incense burning, gongs, and the occasional flute interlude. Definitely big fans of Windhand/Dorthias vocal style and Sleep.

DROID
Melbourne
Hyperreality (LP) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAk63bvttQ4
Big first release from these guys. I havent explored it much but they are on my list of bands to see at first opportunity. Mouth of the Hound is probably my favorite track.

Milkmaids
Sydney
Heavy Sleeper (EP) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpQ8odZlUgw
So this is my friends band. Permanent Hiatus due to babies and the band being spread across the east coast. Lots of influence from Electric Wizard, Sabbath, Melvins.
